What are the qualifications to be a "sky-marshall"?

Is there an academy? Are there civil service tests? What is the training? Is it union? What's the pay? In other words, "Where do they come from?".

http://www.leftseat.com/marshal.htm

and I quoteth:

"The Federal Air Marshall requirements and qualifications are among the most stringent of any U.S. federal law enforcement agency.

You can find out about the job, compensation, qualification requirements and how to apply at www.FlightDuty.com.

Requirements for eligible Air Marshal Applicants:

U.S. Citizenship

Must be under 40 years of age at appointment *

Strict FAA medical standards must be met "

Wow, so the strictest requirements of any federal agency is that you have to be a 40 yr old citizen in good health?

9. Actually, ATC applicants have to be under 32...
I've been there nearly 15 years and I'm still a couple of years from 40.

2. I used to work for
FAA Security and worked w/marshalls. The quals were pretty stringent, though that was pre-9/11, so I don't know if the standards have been lowered. They had to be in good physical shape, take an 11-week (I think) training course in VA, and of course they had to know how to shoot a gun accurately. That's all I've got.

6. Saw this:
"The shooting was the first since the current Federal Air Marshal Service program went into effect following the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackings and terrorist attacks. The exact number of marshals is classified, although officials acknowledge there are several thousand, assigned in groups of two to flights across the country.

All air marshals go through a seven-week course in Artesia, N.M., which includes a course called "managing abnormal behavior," according to Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle.

After that, they take a six-week course in Atlantic City, which involves training for various scenarios covering drunken passengers, terrorist threats, passengers who exhibit violent behavior and other situations, Doyle said."

10. Since this is the first shooting since 2001, that's complete bullshit.
Regardless of how you feel about the FAM program, they are NOT trigger-happy.

14. Even though they haven't released the names of the marshals
They said they were both from Miami, one having worked in the Border Patrol, the other for Customs. If there is one thing LEOs from Miami have in common, is they are extremely aggressive. If I weren't so tired, I would pull up a whole bunch of links, but right now, I will leave you with three, including one that came out today.

Now I know this doesn't prove anything about what happened on that plane, but I believe the marshals are lying about him saying he had a bomb. And it's not just because they're from Miami. I do believe these two marshals in particular were trigger-happy.

15. Then they're the first...
Nationwide (in Miami, too) FAMs have proved that they're anything but "trigger-happy"...

17. I wish they would release their names
I think it's bullshit that they're not releasing their names for "national security" reasons. Isn't this the same administration that revealed the name of a CIA Agent?

18. CNN did a one-hour documentary on it.
The Homeland Security Department made arrangements to purchase the Greens Marshals Institute and immediately sent in their own people. There was a big controversy with the union.

They're also cutting a transportation deal with Cushman.
