BRAD BLOG: Hunger Strike in Ohio Over New Anti-Democratic GOP Legislation!
Ohio Citizen Continues Hunger Strike, Prayer Vigil in Buckeye State to Oppose Anti-Democratic Law Set to Pass Statehouse
'Christian Faith Requires Personal Sacrifice' Says Divinity Student Protesting Law Said to Ensure Republican Control of Scandal-Ridden Ohio

To protest what Free Press investigative reporters describe as a "holiday burial for American Democracy" in the Buckeye State, Ohio divinity student and Columbus resident, Jonathan Meier is continuing his prayer vigil and hunger strike at the Ohio Statehouse despite heavy snow and brutally cold winter temperatures.

House Bill 3 has already passed the House and is about to be approved by the Republican-dominated Senate in the ground-zero snakepit of GOP political corruption otherwise known as as Ohio.

Activist Meier's, in a just-issued press release says "that his Christian faith calls him to 'constantly pursue social justice and illuminate social ills, and, often, this call requires personal sacrifice."

The democracy-stifling new law, set to pass in the Republican-dominated Statehouse as early as this week, "opens voter registration activists to partisan prosecution, exempts electronic voting machines from public scrutiny, quintuples the cost of citizen-requested statewide recounts and makes it illegal to challenge a presidential vote count or, indeed, any federal election result in Ohio."...

MORE DETAILS, FULL IMPLICATIONS FOR AMERICA & THE COURAGEOUS PROTEST AGAINST THIS OUTRAGEOUS NEW LAW:

3. Sounds almost Christ-like, doesn't it?
"... his Christian faith calls him to 'constantly pursue social justice and illuminate social ills, and, often, this call requires personal sacrifice."

It's nice to know that TRUE Chistianity, along with TRUE democracy, is not completely dead in this country.

7. You're Welcome and...
I hope folks in Columbus will turn out to the Statehouse to support Jonathon!

Yes, I know it's cold. But so it's a country without democracy!

11. The Passion of the Ohio Divinity Student
is dramatizing the tragedy of a brutalized, flagellated democracy. This needs to go to MSM.

Citizens' Alliance for Secure Elections Press Release:
Ohio Senate Rules Committee DEPRIVES VOTERS OF RIGHTS
AND IGNORES THE REAL THREAT OF ELECTION FRAUD --
ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES.

H.B. 3 Ignores all Citizen Input in Passing H.B. 3:

CASE Ohio, Citizens Alliance for Secure Elections,
www.caseohio.org, warns of Increased Voter
Disenfranchisement, the Dangers of Electronic Voting
Machines, and the Unconstitutionality of Denying the
Right to Register Voters and Challenge Election
Results.
COLUMBUS, OH - THE OHIO SENATE RULES COMMITTEE
DEPRIVED OHIO VOTERS OF RIGHTS AND IGNORED THE REAL
THREAT OF ELECTION FRAUD -- ELECTRONIC VOTING
MACHINES. On December 7, 2005, (ISN"T THAT THE
ANNIVERSARY OF PEARL HARBOR? IF SO WE SHOULD REFERENCE
THAT AMERICANS WERE ATTACKED AGAIN) the Rules
Committee of the Ohio Senate approved H.B. 3 despite
months of strong opposition from voting rights groups
such as CASE, the League of Women Voters, (name other
groups) and myriad individuals. The four Democrat
committee members refused to take part in the final
vote and walked out to protest the Republican
steamrolling of their legislative colleagues and the
public.

HB 3 requires, among other things, that voters present
a current, government-issued ID with a current
address. This requirement alone will affect hundreds
of thousands of voters and will disenfranchise many
tens of thousands of them. Students, the elderly,
youth, the homeless, and recently moved families will
be required to produce alternate forms of ID. The
result will be confusion, frustration, discouragement,
and possibly anger directed toward the Ohio Senators
who forced this bill into law.

HB 3 also makes it impossibly difficult for voting
advocacy organizations to register new voters by
making the process extremely slow and expensive and
punishing workers who make a mistake with the threat
of a felony penalty. Workers who could be working
state-wide to register voters are now required to
register with every Board of Elections in the state,
take a test from every board, and return any
registration to the board of the newly registered
voter, as opposed to mailing the registrations in.
This makes registration drives at gatherings like the
Ohio State Fair and similar events impossible.

HB 3 also, in a deadly move, removes a process to
audit the electronic voting machines, the touchscreen
"black box" machines, which are proven to be prone to
errors and susceptible to hacking, as recognized by
the recent General Accounting Office (GAO) report, GAO
05-956 "Federal Efforts to Improve Security and
Reliability of Electronic Voting Systems Are Under
Way, but Key Activities Need to Be Completed."

HB 3 has destroyed voters' rights to challenge
election results.
The Republicans in the Ohio legislature, while
focusing their efforts on prohibiting access to voter
registration and voting, failed to address the real
threat of election fraud - Electronic Voting Machines.
The General Accounting Office, (GAO) recently released
a scathing107 page report on electronic voting
machines in our country. The report supports what
CASE has been claiming for the past two years - that
electronic voting machines are not secure, not
accountable, not transparent, not accurate, and not
certifiable. A bipartisan panel, which included both
Republican Congressman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and
Democratic Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) released a
joint news release regarding the GAO report. Most
community news sources have not yet made these
important findings widely available to the public.
CASE advises all Ohio voters to call, email, or FAX
your State Senator today to tell them not to support
HB 3.

CASE advises all Ohio voters to attend the Senate
session at the Ohio Statehouse Tuesday, December 13,
to sit in the gallery while the full Senate considers
the passage of HB 3, at 1:30 PM.

17. kick & message from the OH divinity student on hunger strike
Posted on OH State Forum:
Hello everyone-

I am now three days into the hunger strike and, after spending over 20 hours outside the statehouse in the same spot during those three days, have found it impossible to stay warm, no matter how much extra clothing I put on and no matter how many hand warmers I had. Today, at noon, I admitted to myself that I could not continue fasting AND being
outside.

The strategy around this demonstration has now shifted. I am committed to keep fasting until Tuesday when the Ohio Senate votes on Sub House Bill 3. I also intend to be in a state of prayer throughout the day during the next three days. However, I will have to cut down significantly on the length of time I am outside the statehouse.

As I got home from the statehouse a little bit ago, the thought that was on my mind was, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. My heart and my soul keep telling me that, as our Ohio state motto says, With God, all things are possible, but the last few days have been trying. I believe that the Spirit of God is always with us, that the Spirit is bigger and more powerful than I could ever imagine, that the Spirit can
work on and transform even the hardest of hearts. And I believe that democracy allows for the Spirit to work in that way. But I still need a lot of help in my unbelief. I still need a lot of help believing in that Hope beyond hope and in the true power of God working through individuals.

I ask you all to help God help me with my unbelief.

On Tuesday at 1pm, the Ohio Senate will be voting on HB3. If passed, the bill would undoubtedly leave a large segment of our population without a voice – namely, the poorest and most marginalized among us and it would give permission for other states to follow suit.

Friends, I ask you to join me on Tuesday at 10am at the statehouse to talk with our state senators to lay bare our spirits and to speak from our hearts to tell them why this bill is wrong. They need to hear that heart-voice, and they need to hear it from us.
Imagine what that would be like hundreds of people of faith going to the statehouse and flooding the offices of our senators, talking to them on a spiritual level, treating them like the children of God that they are, yet explaining to them the wrong of the situation.

I know it is finals week and we are all busily trying to get our papers done, but please come to the statehouse at 10am on Tuesday, and bring your congregation with you. You might be thinking that you don't know enough about House Bill 3 to talk to senators about it please write me back if that's how you feel and I will get you more information ASAP. It will be our presence more than anything that, I believe, will transform their hearts.

Where: Ohio Statehouse; corner of Broad St. and High St. in Columbus.
When: Tuesday, December 10, 10:00am-noon. (posters note: Assuming he means Dec. 13 as this was posted Sat. Dec. 10.)

Meet in the rotunda of the Statehouse (right inside the main entrance of the statehouse off of High Street). Talking points on HB3 will be provided on Tuesday. We will team up when we talk to the senators, so you won't be alone. Call me on my cell phone at any time from now until
then (614)208-1593.

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.

In hope,
Jonathan Meier
