the opposite of likeable
Ron Silver (ick) was interviewed by the NYT Magazine:

He's talking about Shrub:
He is really a likable guy. At one point he said: "You're a good man, Ronnie. It is nice to see you." And I was kidding around, so I said, "Mr. President, only my mother calls me Ronnie." And he looks me in the eye and says, "You're a good man, Ronnie."

I know I overreact when star-struck people say * is nice when really he's just being presumptuously overfamiliar, but I thought that in this case maybe "obnoxious" is more appropriate than "likeable."

* is just saying "Don't you tell me what I can and can't call you. I'm the big shot here." Which may be true and all, but it certainly isn't nice. The definition of a gentleman, to me, is someone who treats the guy behind the McDonald's counter with the same respect with which he treats his boss.

1. Very well said, renate.
I don't really think anyone EVER saw W as "likeable"- That's just their very effective spin.

5. Every time the man speaks
unless it is a prepared script, he had a questioning whine in his voice that to me translates something like this "eeeeh...but we....and then we...so you really can't blame us because we....and we're not going to...because we..." He always sounds defensive and petulant and he speaks down to the speaker, which is actually a pretty good trick because he's WAY down there himself.

His brother does the same thing, but a bit differently. Really whiny attitude. I see this attitude in my classroom in children of very domineering parents. And they're sneaky, too.
