Is there a correlation between RW Homophobic Speech and Hate Crimes?

This graph went from May of 2003 to September of 2004. One should note that the really high point is when the 'sodomy' laws were ruled Unconstitutional, and we all know the 'christian' Right had a field day with that.

What do you all see in this graph?

1. I noticed it back when Reagan was in office. An
uptick in the number of hate crimes..and that was before the vitriol being spewed on radio non-stop like it is now.

6.  They didn't track hate crimes years ago but they were far worse
then---I'm talking forties and fifties.

2. Sadly, the hate speech just keeps getting worse.
And I don't dispute the correlation at all. But I'm curious ... how did they quantify the amount of hate speech?

3. I sourced that from PFAW

I plugged it in wherever I found something that a RW'er said when they opposed GLBT rights in their 'News from the Right' section.

I got the 'Hate Crimes' part from the Hate Watch section in the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I cross-referenced this and I myself didn't expect the correlation to look as strong as this.

4. I think there is.
The constant bashing and presentation of gays as "abominations" does seep into the minuscule brains of the rw hate talk listeners and makes it acceptable, even desirable, to them. It's disgusting and sick.

5. What I see in it...
...is confirmation of what I know to be true from personal experience, and from the rising hostility reflected in every medium, especially the Internet.

The only good thing I see is that somebody's found a way to quantify it, as I am often told it's not real, but all in my head.

P.S. Anyone who's never checked out http://www.splc.org -- do so, and spend some time browsing and reading, especially the articles about subjects you don't think you have any interest in; you will learn how all of the hate-filled pseudo-religiosity -- all of it -- is interconnected. The SPLC site is one of the Web's greatest treasures. And there's nothing shabby about PFAW, either.

8. Graphs and statistics are nice, but. . .
these are the RW-ers we're talking about. Truth doesn't matter. Say it often enough, and it becomes true. So, statistics aside, yes, there is a correlation. The point in this case, however, is that they don't give a damn, because the crimes are directed at non-white people, usually of lower socio-economic classes. So, these are not so much hate crimes as evidence of intelligent design course corrections.
