Here's Why A Big Deal Was Made About Tookie.
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 04:39 PM by Solomon
I keep hearing people ask why all the attention is focused on Tookie when there are other more deserving cases.

The reason Tookie is such a big deal is that it is only in cases of this sort where the crime was so heinous, that the civilization of a people is truly tested. It's how we treat the very worst of us, that defines how civilized we are.

We are so old testament.

"It's how we treat the very worst of us that defines how civilized we are." Amen.

13. I'm with you, also recommended
because this is what the issue really is. Williams himself is largely irrelevant. The DP is what is wrong.

2. Tookie still running the Crips?
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 04:37 PM by medeak
this didn't seem to get much attention in the media? Has huge bank account? But accusations said to be nonvalid...but he still worked out with the Crips and son is in prison and a proud Crip.

Nothing else is suprising in that context.

5. I disagree
The reason for this attention is because he has supposedly been changed and has celebrities supporting his cause. Add Ahnold and it's a media story.

A true test would be a non-repentant serial killer.

7. agree...
a poor black with no connections wouldn't get the media coverage and may have a higher chance of actually being innocent.

As a Crip founder this guy has hutzpa...and still does.

9. But it was the stern opposition to so- called hollywood stars that
caused it to become so big. The heinous nature of the crime made it a hot button issue.

15. Are you a joke? You posted a stupid story in post number 2 in
this thread which talks about how unusual it was for prison people to get involved.

(Jeez. Rarely have I seen someone hoisted on their own petard in the very same thread!)

"Old Testament" to me. The way that people behave tells me that humans are primative at their core.

22. Yes.
Since he is the Word of God, and inspired the Bible, then Romans 13-1-5 is the Word of Jesus, just as much as the parts that you may like.

29. exactly. and also note that
it is speaking to the subjects of authority (as a warning of sorts) rather than to the agents of authority (as an authorization or as a directive).

fundies to justify worship of Bush. "Authority is ordained of God" bullshit.

ain't it funny how they waited until the clinton years were over to break that one out? ;)

25. Check your facts.
I am totally opposed to the DP in this and all cases, but Japan executes one or two people a year and is most certainly civilized and China executes a lot of people every year and they aren't convinved that the rest of the world is civilized.

30. I see the crimes supported by Congress (both parties!) are worse.
Making war on whole peoples (not just in Iraq, but in Colombia, Palestine, Haiti...)

We let Johnson, Nixon, Ford (who gave the okay for the genocide of East Timor) walk the streets. where is this justice? It is there we showed the world how we treat the very worst of us, they get nice retirements.

Making policies that give to the wealthy, and take from the poor creates incredible hardship, and is the starting point for the violence you see in impoverished communities.

What the thugs in congress have done (and the Bush regime) are infinitely worse than anything Tookie was accused of.

Lastly, one has to consider the whole criminal "justice" system that is for rich people, and white people. I do not believe Tookie got a fair trial.

31. We are Old Testament
It sucks. Rhandi played today (at fortyfive minutes past the first hour) the goodbye statements from Mr. Williams and intertwined with it was this kid about my age who is almost finished with his degree (I'm twenty-three) and he said Mr. Williams' example help to keep him away from gangs and he grew up in the same inviornment. I think we should ban the death penalty.
We can have the death penalty, which is nothing more than legal murder, but not health care for those of us without it?
