1. Thtat is not why we do it.
we do so to tech their is consequence for unrepentant action. We do so to protect society from ever allowing cretans to wakk free. It is not about retribution, it is not about deterrance it is about protection.

Tookie, has never admitted complicity in any of the crime he was convicted ov. He never apologised for either the violentce or the drug and turf wars that the CRip and Bloods had for many years on a gneration of african american men in South Central LA. He bears the responsibility for hundreds of deaths not just the four he committed.

Even in his writings, laudable though they may be, there was no sense of apology. This man led a despicable life.

2. Do you believe that if he did admit it and was repentant, that he
wouldn't be dying tomorrow?

4. That's a very good question. I feel it should work that way.
Somehow, true repentance and forgiveness should work on several levels: the individual, the cosmic, and the society. It seems to me that repentance should bring the opportunity to live out a changed life, as society performs the function of granting clemency to the repentant one. Others might say that the death penalty precludes the possibility of such a change, but in the case of one who has not come to grips with the basic truth of his actions, the group seeks to rid itself of such "trash."

I dunno, it's a difficult call.

3. question....
How does killing a prisoner protect us any better than keeping him incarcerated would?

How can you say it's not about deterrance in one breath, and in the same breath say, and I quote, "we do so to teach there is consequence for unrepentant action." That is the very definition of deterrance, and statistics show overwhelmingly that the death penalty is not a deterrant.

So, the argument for protection is bogus, as is the argument for deterrance. Want to try again?

5. I don't think "deterrence" and "consequence" have quite the same meaning.
One suggests prevention, and the other, punishment.

6. You've focused on the wrong word.
The poster said we do it to "teach," thus an assertion of deterrance.

7. Right you are. I'll point out, though, that both concepts are in play
as a group seeks to banish from life those who offend it. I'm not supposing that the DP is a deterrent to crime; the "consequence" option is a vengeful one, but separate from the idea of protection.
