Mike Farrell rocks
I just saw him on Larry King Live at what appeared to be a vigil. Very passionate speaker regarding the absurdity of capital punishment.

This is an excerpt from his website:

http://www.mikefarrell.org/publications/Tookie.html

"I believe killing is wrong. That being so, I believe that the state (or the people in a civilized society) have a special responsibility to always act in a manner that honors the principles of humanity that underpin our society. For the state to kill teaches that killing is appropriate under certain circumstances and, by extension, provides justification to those who believe that their particular case or circumstance warrants it as well. The young, in particular, learn behavior from us and this requires that we always reach for the higher standard."

2. Victim: "There needs to be some closure!"
"There has to be some punishment for these heinous crimes!"

Life in prison with no possibility of parole isn't punishment? How does an execution give "closure" 25 years after the fact?

4. I agree
The death penalty is the easy way out for someone to not serve their crime. They will only go on to the after life. Killing someone else because you had something bad happen to you makes you no better than they are. They have blood on their hands. It won't make you feel any better. The other person won't rise up from the dead and reappear to life.

11. Closure: When the jail doors stay closed until the murderer dies.
Anything more is simply barbarism.

15. The word "closure" has been hijacked. It's now a codeword for vengeance.

12. I met Mike in the basement of the Santa Monica library
when Doug and I went there for a talent show for handicapped kids.

There was no press there, no reason in the world to be there -- unless you liked kids.

He was great with them. It was very cool to see. :)

13. His paragraph succinctly sums up my belief about the death
penalty also.

I'm thankful I live in a state which does not have the death penalty.

16. When you spank a child you teach that child that hitting makes a person
do what you want and when the state kills for gratification or vengeance what does that teach?

17. Check out this post I found on Mike's website forum:
Name: David Cook
Email: dacook@wiu.k12.pa.us
Where are you from?: Pennsylvania
Comments: Mike: I respect you as an actor and as a human who fights for human rights but, Are You CRAZY Tookie Williams was a cold blooded murderer. Refomed!!! Who knows for sure but, if you want to have some compasion have some for the family of Albert Owens who was just doing his job when Tookie came in and shot him to death. Tell his children and his family what a wonderful person Tookie became, that should make all the difference in the world. Mike you are smarter then this, the man is a killer and should have been delt with 27 years ago. May the love of Christ fill you this holiday season and keep up your efforts. PEACE: David Cook

I added the bold for emphasis. The sentence kinda reads like : Tookie should have been killed years ago, and, oh yeah, may the love of Christ fill you...blah blah blah. I found that to be pretty funny, in an ironic sort of way.
