2. I Went To A Catholic School In Bangkok, Thailand
and was required to take a Morals class. Basically, if you showed up, and didn't BLATANTLY nap on your desk, you got an A.

7. In 1972 It Was One Of Only Two English-Speaking Schools
... that we could afford. All the cool kids went to ISB: International School of Bangkok. The rest of us went to Ruam-Rudee International School.

5. Maybe your stepson has a future as a lawyer
If he can BS well enough to get a B in "morality" in a Catholic school then he may be Supreme Court material...

Congrats on his B!

Just as an aside....I was watching the Newshour this week and this guy who won a Nobel Prize for science (or something like that) was a Phd in Physics. During the course of the interview he remarked that he did very poorly in high school and even dropped out.

Good luck to your stepson, Matcom!

8. I work with a graduate of an expensive catholic school
She's doing good to spell her own name. If I were her father, I'd demand my money back. (To be fair to her school, they didn't have much to work with.)

My stepfather, who is U/U, has always praised the education he got from the Jesuits. He doesn't care for their religion, but they gave him a first-class education, a fact which is soon apparent to anyone who tries to debate him. Debate class was mandatory back in his day, and they sharpened his mind unmercifully. His education as a lawyer further intensified the effect. Anytime someone cites something in support of an argument - something that can't immediately be verified - he demands chapter and verse, and when they can't produce it, demolishes their claims as nothing more than hearsay, to be discounted until produced. Then, with his adversary off-balance, he proceeds to tie them in knots.

I've often wished I had a Jesuit education, especially when debating him.

9. I was also fortunate to have a jesuit education, and you're right -
they're great at teaching logic and analysis, they insist on having the facts to support a position, and they actually allow a pretty wide range of positions - just be sure you have the information to back it up.

And debate wasn't a course I took, it was part of every class I took.

I treasure the education they helped me get and would actually welcome spending several days a week in that environment again.

After being taught by Jesuits, most American discussion is pretty vapid since people like Rush Limbaugh are frequently cited as the standard. I know that's not true here on DU, but outside of here it's hard to have a vigorous discussion.

11. morality
The only lessons I remember from Catholic school dealing with morality taught us teenaged boys to refrain from masturbation and premarital sex.

Failed the course.
