"To use the word Kwanza in the same sentence with Christmas is ridiculous"

Tim Wildmon is president of American Family Association and American Family Radio.

====
....According to Alan Cooperman, the reporter I spoke with at the Washington Post, The White House used to send out Christmas cards up until Bill Clinton became President. He changed it to a generic holiday card and President Bush has kept it that way because - according to Laura Bush's press secretary Susan Whitson: "The cards in recent years have included best wishes for a holiday season, rather than Christmas wishes, because they are sent to people of all faiths."

That is a pathetic answer, Susan. Just pitiful. And you can pass my sentiments on to the President and Mrs. Bush.....

Kwanza merchandise? Give me a break. To use the word Kwanza (sic) in the same sentence with Christmas when you are talking about American culture is utterly ridiculous. The vast majority of people in this country don't even know what Kwanza is (a secular celebration of African culture), much less what Kwanza "merchandise" is.

Christmas is a federal holiday. It has been since the year 1870. It is only recently that anyone had a problem with it. And remember, without Jesus Christ, there would be no Christmas to secularize.

How many times will this have to be proved wrong before they quit using it?

3. Without Jesus Christ...
...we'd be calling it Winter Solstice, or T-mas, or the Winter Festival, or Hannakha <sp>, or whatever. Most cultures and religions have a winter ritual, there's nothing sacred about the time of year.

12. You beat me to it!
It's almost Yule, y'all! Many local pagan groups have public rites -- in the spirit of ecumenicalism, why don't you go to a Yule/Solstice celebration?

7. Kwanzaa!! Millions celebrate it. I honor it in political cartoons.
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 05:03 AM by Neil Lisst
I think I can guarantee that I'm the only political cartoonist in the nation with THREE Kwanzaa cartoons in the past week:

10. I *LOVE* the third one in particular!
Of course, Wildmon would say that only his celebration counts.

13. Glad you like it. That's today's cartoon. I really do like it, too.
I wanted something that simply but elegantly said what we all know is true. It's a season of diverse celebrations, and there is nothing more American than consideration for the beliefs of others.

We weren't born a Christian nation, but a nation where religious freedom for the odd ball was accepted.

19. I Feel So Sorry For Conservatives...
...because they seem to fear other cultures & traditions. I have never been that way. Differences make life more interesting. Conservatives must lead such dull lives, staying in their little conservative bubble. They fear anything that is from a different tradition, like Kwanzaa. It's so sad that they limit themselves so much.
