Next California prisoner up for execution?
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 05:20 AM by Baclava
"State could push for 5 executions in busier 2006"

"William Payton, 47, is the Orange County inmate most likely to be executed in the next year, according to the state attorney general's staff. Payton's death sentence was upheld this year by the U.S. Supreme Court, but he still has an issue pending before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He was sentenced to death for a May 1980 crime in which he stabbed to death Pamela Montgomery, 21, and then stabbed boarding house operator Patricia Pensinger 40 times and her 10-year-old son, Blane, 23 times. Both survived"

1. Good gravy, what "justice" is this 25 years after the fact?
George W. Bush "changed his life" at 40 and does not want to talk about what he did in the 70's, after all!

2. The link is for 'registered users' only. Is there
any mention of Ramone Salcido on that list?

3. Opps - sorry...here's the others mentioned.
Clarence Ray Allen, 75, is scheduled to die Jan. 17. He was convicted in Glenn County of three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances in the deaths of three people and one count of conspiracy for a vengeance crime in Fresno County. Allen, who at one time owned a security company, had arranged with another inmate at Folsom prison to kill those responsible for his being convicted of burglary, according to prison records.

Mitchell Carlton Sims, 45, had his death sentence for the 1985 slaying of Domino's Pizza deliveryman John S. Harrigan in Glendale upheld Thursday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Sims can appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but if that court rejects his appeal, he could be executed in 2006, the California Attorney General's Office reported.

Michael Morales, 45, was sentenced to death for the 1981 rape and murder of a 17-year-old Lodi girl. His appeal was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in October. No execution date has been set.

Kevin Cooper, 48, came within six hours of execution in February 2004 for the murders of Santa Ana chiropractors Douglas and Peggy Ryen in their home in Chino. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stopped the execution to allow new evidence to be weighed, including blood and hair gathered at the crime scene and elsewhere. A San Diego judge ruled that the new evidence reconfirmed that Cooper was the killer. Cooper is trying to appeal her ruling but the state is opposing the appeal.

4. Terrible.
Is there anyway that we (and by "we", I mean Californian's (and progressives, in general)) can get a anti-Death Penalty bill together?

I'm not familiar with CA politics, so I don't know if it has been tried in the past, but given your two Senators it seems like it would gain momentum.
