For those who claim Tookie is irrelevant in this crusade against DP
Can we expect to see the same protests, candlelight vigils, and multiple desperate posts on DU begging people to call and demand clemency for Clarence Ray Allen prior to January 17? Clarence Ray Allen is a white supremacist and crime boss scheduled to die at San Quentin on that day. Surely his death will evoke the same urgency in everyone here.

Just wondering.

5. Well you won't see the same high profile response because it's not a high
profile case. You can count on there being a more subdued campaign, as there is with every execution, urging clemency.

However, unlike with the Williams case, there hasn't been any move made by Allen to discourage others from following in his footsteps, etc.

6. I am Black and I believe that Clarence should NOT get the DP

His death would be Barbaric and it would in no way stop the racists and bigots from continuing to do their dirty deeds.

It would only give them more reason to hate and do harm to others.

I would certainly call Arnold, since he is our moral authority in California.
I'll call him right now and invite others to join me.

Goclark, and while i'm white, i am the mother of a 12 yr old Black son-
I despise racisim- But, murder is never the answer-

"round, and round and round in the circle game"
except it is more of a downward spiral.

And will only stop, when people have the courage, mercy, and insight to say ENOUGH!

2 wrongs don't make 1 right.

17. I admire your moral consistency.
I doubt you will see many others here become public activists for his sake.

9. I think you will find that a large number of Duers detest the death
penalty, regfardless of who is the recipient. I feel that way. Any killing by the state is wrong. I am just as adamantly opposed to a White Supremicist being killed by the state as anyone else.

10. Probably if we see the same number of posts...
cheering for his death and singing "burn baby burn".

It was the media attention of this particular case that generated all the discussion. I think it's a sad reflection on American society that every execution doesn't generate the same sort of media attention.

Have Americans become so used to killing that executions are an ordinary event?

11. I am against the DP because of what it says
about us as a society more than because of any individual. So I don't care who it is, I still won't support it. As for the amount of protests, vigils, etc. it all depends on how high profile the case is. Some executions hardly get any publicity or notice. Others get a lot of it.

Will you be a public activist for him? The way you have been for Tookie?

16. We shall see...
but I'm not holding my breath. Interesting that people are already arguing that *that* will be a low profile case, as though the level of profile weren't controlled in large part by the activists who draw attention to what is happening.

Certainly postings on DU, at least, are within the control of people here. I guess we will see whether people choose to rally around Clarence, like they did for Tookie.

I despise the death penalty but..., I don't think Tookie was the one to rally around. I fully support commuting ALL dp cases to LWOP.

I just think Tookie was a polarizing figure who it was very hard to have sympathy for. Nevertheless, it sickens me that we (the state) put people to death, it is ghastly. Two wrongs make a wrong.

19. The Death Penalty is flat out wrong
under any and all circumstances. The state should not be putting people to death. It is immoral.
