Are white New Orleans people more liberal than whites outside of the city?
The reason I ask is because the reality I think we will all have to face is that the city is going to be much whiter than it was in the past. In a lot of other big cities white people are much more liberal than white suburbanites or white rural folks. White voters in NYC, SF, LA and Austin, for example, are solidly Democratic voters.

Blanco's decision to postpone the elections makes me a little nervous, if for no other reason than that it sets precedence for this president to do the same thing in the event of a terrorist attack. I don't like that. I would have been more comfortable with a definite date as to when the city elections would be held, as well as a massive effort to ensure that all absentee voters can be allowed to vote (how that's to be done, I don't know; that's why we have schools that give public policy degrees). At some point the election is going to have to be held.

1. As a born and bred New Orleanian (who doesn't live there now), I think so.
You look at St Bernard, Old Metarie, The West Bank... these seem to be generally pretty conservative areas. But the white New Orleanians I have known who choose to live in the city seem, on the whole, to be more liberal.

I wouldn't say they're raving communists or anything (many would probably think DU is "out there", if they have even heard of it). But they're more liberal than their suburban counterparts.

2. I agree. I grew up there and agree with your assessment.
The Florida Parishes are definitely more conservative due to white flight from Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

BTW, West Bank is the Best Bank. :)

7. The area north of Lake Ponchartrain (The Florida Parishes)
are some of the most conservative, redneck assholes you never want to meet. It was this area that gave us David Duke.

White New Orleanians tend to be more liberal than the whites in the suburbs.
