Would anyone like to join in wishing fellow DUers joy and peace...
in this age-old time of midwinter celebration of light? Our family celebrates as Christians, many friends as Jews, others only as people of good will, and fun parties with peppermint Cosmos, others as parents of children with wonder in their eyes as trees uncharacteristically sparkle, some even waiting on line at Macy's for a visit with Santa. Some drop some money in buckets to help out folks in need, some give substantial donations to charities, some round up toys for kids Santa might miss. Some hang a wreath on the door, some go nuts with strings of lights, some light menorahs, some lie, snowsuited, in the snow and move their arms and legs to make "angels." Most endure commercialism, and some miserable family togetherness, and time pressure, and loneliness, but manage to find a bit of the light in the darkness, the comfort and joy, the ancients found.

So for any among us who are outraged at accusations of a war on Christmas, but don't want to fuck Christmas or any of the other celebrations of this season (which all of us here -- please -- are educated enough to know are based on ancient tradition, and not invented by Christians), and would, in fact, like to extend a greeting to others here, I'll start --

In a world full of tragedy and sorrow, may you find some moments during this season of PEACE AND JOY, my fellow DUers!

8. Plant a Peace Tree
Linda Beck
Peace Tree

The world we live in is a garden
Mankind reaps what mankind sews
We are farming our future
Harvesting the things we grow
Plant a peace tree for the children
It will remain here when we go
Plant a peace tree for the children
Give it love and watch it grow
Through the ages we’ve been fighting
Now it’s time to make a change
Cast aside those crazy weapons
Time to quit our foolish games

A peaceful world is like an oak tree
It takes time to get its start
And it survives the coldest winters
When it lives within our hearts
Plant a peace tree for the children
It will remain here when we go
Plant a peace tree for the children
Give it love and watch it grow
Every day the roots grow deeper
Help to make the peace tree strong
Every day our dream grows higher
Bring the world where it belongs

Plant a tree and start a forest
For generations yet to come
They’ll look back and they’ll remember
Carry on the things we’ve done
Plant a peace tree for the children
It will remain here when we go
Plant a peace tree for the children
Give it love and watch it grow
So today we plant a sapling
Nurture it and also pray
That the ones who play beneath it
May the live in peace always
Plant a peace tree for the children
It will remain here when we go
Plant a peace tree for the children
Give it love and watch it grow
