Warner would defeat Allen in hypothetical presidential election in VA
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 02:50 PM by WI_DEM
Both Governor Mark Warner and Senator George Allen of Virginia want to run for president in 2008--and if it turns out that both are nominated by their respective parties, Warner has the upper hand in gaining Virginia's 15 electoral votes.

Warner would defeat Allen 49-44 percent. Both men have strong favorability ratings in the state, but Warner's is slightly higher at 71% to Allen's 67%.

I actually hope Allen is the nominee (certainly more than McCain) because I think he would be much easier to defeat.

1. Great news!
Now only if someone can upset Allen in 06. That would end his presidential plans and be a good sign that VA is turning blue.

11. Is he re-running?
I know Frist isn't so he might be making plans. I haven't heard anything here in Tennessee.

12. Frist supports term limits in the Senate
That's part of why he isn't running again, but Allen will run again, I think.

15. Surprise, surprise!
I'm shocked I tell you. My congressman said he wouldn't run after so many terms, but guess what happened with that one? He also said his kids wouldn't go to a private school but they do. So I'm actually shocked with Frist. For once he tells the truth.

19. Sorry about your congressman
But Frist is a pretty honest guy, unless he's talking about his portfolio.

2. Good to hear. I applaud those Virginians who reject Allen --
-- in favor of Warner, or for that matter, who reject Allen in and of himself.

5. Actually, Allen is sort of a likable guy
Yeah he is big and dumb but he is mild mannered. If he weren't in bed with Pat Robertson and Falwell I might actually respect him.

6. This is great!!
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 02:36 PM by FreedomAngel82
I hope he runs. I think he would be great. I think in 2008 there will be a lot of great canidates. I don't know if Kerry is going to run or not but if he doesn't I'm right now supporting Warner. I'm liking him and I do see where he comes from on his stance on Iraq which is why, in my opinion, it's important we take back the Congress since they do investigations. I think Warner did a great job with Virgina, and in one term(!), and he's someone different from past president's and canidates and he has a lot to offer people. Go to c-span.org and watch some of his appearances. He's really growing on me.

8. Allen is notorious for the lack of response and service
his office provides. You can always tell a "good" staff. John Warner (a Republican) for instance, never fails to answer a single letter I send to him. I've only gotten responses once or twice from Allen on activist stuff. Granted Warner doesn't agree with me on hardly any issues, but his staff makes sure that the voting public is served and letters are answered. Warner is a pro. Allen's staff is extremely unreliable. Allen doesn't give a damn about his constituents, he's a goofy amateur, and it shows.

On the other hand, Mark Warner is extremely popular with middle-of-the-road independents and less dogmatic pro-military Republicans in this state. If a really dogmatic right wing candidate runs Virginia would probably go the other way.

9. Here's some more with Warner
http://www.thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/Frontpage/071305/warner.html

And another: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8062256

Here this article quotes that Bill around Thanksgiving secretly met with Mark Warner.

Link: http://www.radaronline.com/fresh-intelligence/2005/11/28/index.php#report_004538

<Though the pundits have all but ordained her as the Democrats’ next presidential nominee, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Sen. Hillary Clinton. Publicly at least, the junior Senator from New York still insists she hasn’t made up her mind about a presidential run. But while her coy denials and growing war chest have kept many Democratic opponents on the sidelines, at least one party poobah has not been shy about checking out her competition. Sources close to the Democratic National Committee claim that Bill Clinton has recently held a series of secret meetings with Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a much-hyped party moderate who is rapidly emerging as his wife’s most significant challenger for the Democratic nomination.

17. I think with Warner
He could be like another Bill Clinton. I've read he is pro-choice and for LGBT rights so that would show us what type of judges he'd get. Plus, if we can have him with a democratic majority we could really clean up house! What I like about Warner is he works well with other people and doesn't write you off. That's so rude when you don't even get a copy or paste letter back. Frist is my senator and I've at least gotten that much and in a reasonable time. My congressman may be a republican whore too but he at least actually replies to me even if it is party lines. I give him that much which is more than some people obviously get.

10. I don't think it will be McCain
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 03:10 PM by FreedomAngel82
McCain isn't fundie enough for them and now days for whatever reason you have to cater to the fundies (which is quite sad) even though it was reported on crooksandliars.com that he met with Falwell so he's obviously trying to align with them and go that route and also with Bush and the neocons since they have a lot of people in their pockets.

McCain's support of stem cell research just tears them up. It will be Brownback, Allen or some other Theocrat.

24. What about Romney?
Last Sunday he had a meeting thing before Warner and he is pretty good at public speaking and everything. I think he'd be like Guiliani and labeled a liberal and the republicans tend to focus on the south. I think Warner would do better here since he is a moderate and won't have the "liberal" label on him even though they'll probably try.

25. Romney might be too liberal for the GOP base
He is smart and a good speaker, but he really has no power as Governor. Democrats have a veto-proof super majority in the Massachussets legislature, so Romney only does what the legislature wants. Anyway, he will have his hands full getting re-elected.
