Happy Winter Solstice.
I will not celebrate man made holidays like christmas, Kwanzaa, and Easter, I will celebrate the beginning of the days growing longer. It is the resurrection of the sun. It is the hope of a spring and the resurrection of the green earth here in the north.

The Sun is real, it makes life possible here on earth. Those man made gods don't do a damn thing for me.

Sure, I will party down on Halloween and New Years. They are just fun, no real real baggage attached to them. Nobody trying to take away my rights because I do or don't celebrate these excuses for a party.

or do you hate America and baby Jesus, wrapped in swaddling red white and blue?

22. What is with all this "happy cheer"?
Personally, I think taking time off for a religious holiday absurd. If you want to use your vacation time, that's fine. But this country would be much more productive if it didn't come to a screeching hault the last 2 weeks of the year. It's one of the reasons this country is behind all the other nations in the world.

28. Here's a link to world-wide holiday list by country:
http://www.qppstudio.net/bankholidays2005.htm

A lot of the predominantly Christian countries celebrate Easter and Christmas for 2 days and also include Corpus Christi or All Souls Day or other Christian holy days.
Note that this is an English site, hence the term "bank holidays" for national or religious holidays on which businesses are closed.

That's the Protestant Work Ethic for you! (Even if you no longer practice, you can't escape.)

Humans need holidays. We've used many different excuses to take time out, hang with friends & feast.

4. Usedto be a real 'christmas' guy - no more
Going with Yule here. My ancestry is celt so why not. Most historians believe christ was born in spring, so let them move their holiday to the spring. They can have a birth-death-rebirth cycle in one week and leave the rest of us alone for 51 weeks.

9. About Easter: they can keep the religious stuff, give me the
fertility aspects. They have the bunny, the flower, and the egg. We need something more explicit like a big erect penis, or better yet an engorged labia. That's more in the spirit of the season. Can you imagine the floats in the Easter parade?

47. Bunnies and Eggs (and almonds) were all fertility laden symbols,
those same symbols still belong to the nature worshippers as well.

But a little more genitalia influenced symbology would do us a world of good.. have to agree with you 100% there.

Dec. 25th makes a fine day to celebrate Yule, though - the day perceptably lengthens. before that its a holding pattern - barely perceptable.

Hallowed Eve - you better think twice before you say that day has no "baggage" attached.

19. interesting, that.
i keep waiting for the pagan roots of "Easter", or "Oestara" to be exposed & the ensuing demand to call it by another name.

but the pagan lingers. because it is tied to nature, and until we figure a way to fuck up the sun, it always will.

51. Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday.
It is celebration of African & African-American culture. Yes, it was invented recently--because slavery (especially in our Protestant country) wiped out many African customs. Many celebrants also observe Christmas, or holy days of other faiths--especially Islam. Although I'm white, I do appreciate the African roots of much American culture.

Humans watching the skies invented Winter Solstice. I'll take any excuse to party.
