Poll question: What's the point? RE: Dependence on oil
Some people seem to think it's only bad when we have to import oil because it funds terrorism and hurts the economy. I think both are bad because I don't want to send my money to assholes in Texas any more than I want to send money to assholes in Saudi Arabia, but maybe that's just the bitter cynical jerk in me.

1. Considering that we don't have enough oil ourselves
these are the same things. If we cut our dependency on foreign the we don't have the oil here to maintain our usage. We need to have a massive program into Renewable Energy, supporting solar, wind, biodiesel, ethanol, etc. It would create jobs here in America, and improve our national security. Check out the Apollo Alliance (www.apolloalliance.org).

2. not necessarily
what if everyone was driving a hybrid and we were drilling in ANWAR and offshore? Then we might be close. In addition, you can barely consider Canada foreign.

Just playing Devil's advocate.

3. There is not enough oil offshore and in ANWR to last a year
let alone keep us going sustainably for a long period of time. ANWR has enough oil to last us like 3-6 months as current usuage rates. If there was massive amounts of oil in our possession just waiting to be drilled there is nothing that could get in the way of it getting pumped out.

Conservation is badly needed and everyone driving a hybrid would surely help, but I see too many 8 mpg Hummer around town to see that happening.
