Is anybody following this story too
It is a sound proof of racism.

Police executing a search warrant/drug raid on a house are unaware that the house is a duplex. The subject of the warrant is arrested, yet the raid team mistakenly enters the other side of the dwelling where a 23 year old black man (Corey Mayes) and his 18 month old daughter are sleeping. As it appears that the officers believed they were in the same dwelling it is thought that they did not reannounce their presence. The officers kick down the door to Mayes’ bedroom and he fires a shot, killing a white police officer - the son of the small town’s police chief. He is arrested. Apparently police acknowledge initially that there were no drugs in Maye’s apartment then the story shifts to them finding “traces” of marijuana and cocaine - possibly the remains of a smoked joint. In January, 2004, Mayes is tried and convicted by an all-white jury of capital murder and sentenced to death.

Its very funny to mention that libertarians and the nra that are always crying foul about gun issues remain silent about this one.

1. Yes! This is absolutely outrageous

and this is the kind of case that the anti-DP lobby should focus on. An innocent black man convicted by a predominantly white Mississippi jury-- and after the trial, two jurors said that one reason they convicted him was that he wasn't ver respectful of authority figures.

2. I read about it last night
It's awful, we don't have a justice system.

3. Two of the 12 jurors were African American as per your link

Other than that mistake in the story, I think this is an excellant case for appeal.

4. You bet this is one to pay attention to
It's insane. Though the police identified themselves before they broke in, that was on the other side of the duplex.

All Maye knew was that someone broke into his house and then his room where he had his infant. He had every right to feel they were in danger, supposedly why guns are good.

This is a tragedy, it is not a capital crime.

And I don't think ONE person believes that if a black intruder burst into a room of a white man and his daughter and then was shot that even if the black man turned out to be an officer, that the white man would even be convicted of murder, much less be on death row. NO WAY.

Imagine if the undercover cop had been black and the occupant of the apartment was the white son of the mayor. Death row? I don't think so. I doubt that he would even have been arrested.

Some very ugly remnants of the old South appear to be alive and well.
