Moore's charges against the DNC...
In another post someone said that, in "Dude, Where's My Country" Michael Moore states that DNC insiders have told him they're writing off the '04 election. Does anyone have info that can corroborate or refute this? I mean, the dems seems to be putting a lot of resources into this election if they're writing it off. I heard McAuliffe on NPR the other day and he sounded very positive. Bush's ratings are dropping. Why on earth would they write '04 off? Anyone got 411 for me? Thanks.

1. I've met SEVERAL DNC people, they are not writing it off
They've already pledged 10 mil to the nominee, and have a full state by state plan for victory.

2. If he had said that the DNC wrote off the 1984 and 1988
elections, I would have nodded in agreement, especially about the 1988. My friends and I commented several times that the campaigning was so inept that it seemed as if the DNC was trying to throw the election.

I will assume the best of the DNC for the moment, but there seem to be plenty of DUers who have written off 2004.

3. Don't forget the time lag between writing a book and publising it
I don't know when Moore actually wrote that bit, but I would not be surprised a bit to learn that the DNC was planning on writing of 2004 back when everyone was yelling about how invulnerable Bush was. Things have changed so quickly that it's hard to remember how unbeatable Bush seemed just a short time ago. Don't forget the Democratic "let's all support Bush... that's how we'll win" strategy in the 2002 elections, after all.

5. I like Moore
and I think he has a lot of good things to say....however, I think this statement goes along with his mindset, that the insider DNC types are not to be trusted. He might have actually heard it, but it could be coming from some low level shlub.
The DNC wants to win this election and no one is writing off anything.

7. I think Donna Brazile is writing off 2004, also. She was non-commital

on Hardball a few weeks ago, except for Gebhardt and Lieberman.

Check out the links below for some interesting insights into her posture with the Neo-cons. Especially the last one where she see the Democratic Party in disarray.

This might have something to do with it...

Donna Brazile, is Chair of the Democratic National Committee's Voting Rights Institute. Brazile, a veteran campaign strategist and former Campaign Manager for Gore-Lieberman 2000, has served as Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and worked on the campaigns of Carter-Mondale and Rev. Jesse Jackson among others.

WASHINGTON -- Two years ago, Donna Brazile, then Al Gore's campaign manager, was engaged in daily combat with Karl Rove, then George W. Bush's top campaign strategist.
Today, they chirpily exchange e-mail, chat on the phone and write letters, indulging in their shared zeal for the inner workings of politics.

''I like her a lot,'' said Mr. Rove, now ensconced in the West Wing as President Bush's chief political adviser.

Ms. Brazile, a committed Democrat who was the first black woman to manage a presidential campaign, has built similar relationships with other Republicans, like Grover Norquist, an influential conservative strategist. And her coziness with them comes as she is deeply frustrated with her own party for what she calls years of taking African-Americans for granted and for failing to organize for elections in a coherent way.

In fact, Ms. Brazile's alienation could well be viewed as emblematic of a Democratic Party in disarray.
