READ AT YOUR OWN RISK:

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK:
Open Letter to America from a Canadian
Never mind that earth-friendly technology already exists to once and for all end dependence on oil, coal and nuclear energy from huge, out-of-control utilities and corporations. You would rather pay through the nose for your insecure comforts, wouldn't you America, and make others pay with their blood.
by W.R. McDougall

13. Upon further review
I jumped the gun on this. I read some of the highlights - but my kid was bugging me to get off the computer so I responded hastily without reading it in depth. I didn't read the Jewish/Israel references. I will read the whole thing right now and then post an informed opinion. Sorry.

14. OK I read the whole thing.
If you remove the following 2 paragraphs:

At the same time, you stand by as the Israelis' secular Zionists--whom you support through the supply of arms and money--slaughter untold numbers of innocents in the West Bank, then blame the Palestinians for bringing the terror upon themselves. (True, there are abominable Arab suicide bombers in Israel's midst. But are they not driven to madness and desperation by your infernal support of international terrorist politics?)

As I write these words, you support a nation run by a convicted murderer by the name of Ariel Sharon who with impunity is carrying out war crimes as cruel and horrendous as those of other sadistic tyrants in history. And you say, in your utter cynicism, 'When will these Palestinians bring this war to an end?'

I would pretty much agree with most of the rest. You have to realize he isn't talking to people like most of us. He's talking to the morons that don't care about anything but where their next 6 pack of bud is coming from or if they'll get laid tonight. He's talking about your typical American uninformed white trash - the people that voted for * twice. He's talking about the freepers!

Sometimes a person goes a little over the top in order to make a point. He did just that, but there is also more that a bit of truth in what he says.

2. The letter has a sophomoric, over-the-top tone to it.
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 08:51 PM by David Dunham
I doubt many Americans will be bothered by it. It also has a distinct anti-semetic tone.

17. I thought he differentiated a lot more than others. Its not anti-Semitic
to condemn the Likuds policies, he specifically named Ariel Sharon (who does have big bad skeletons to deal with). He didnt say Israel with a broad brush which is usually what rings an anti-Semitic bell for some even when it is obvious that people are talking about Israel policy and not Jews.

When we claim anti-semitism we need to be careful that it really is and not someone reffing policy or party. To do otherwise does more harm and pushes people away from understanding.

of course that is JMHO.

20. Why is it anti-semitic?
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 01:33 PM by dutchdemocrat
To criticise Israelis' secular Zionists?

I thought he balanced it....

True, there are abominable Arab suicide bombers in Israel's midst.

7. Mr. Sagle is once again corect: fucking Nazi scum.
Why do people refuse to believe Jews lived in Israel (Judea) before the religion of Islam, let alone "Palestinians", even existed? It's a historic fact. I love DU but hate the anti-Israel/anti-semitic sentiment espoused by some. I despise Israeli fascists just as much as Republican fascists, but that doesn't mean Israel should be destroyed any more than America should be bulldozed and returned to native americans. Get over it - Jews lived in Israel before Islam or "Palestine" ever existed.

16. I just read it, and he didn't say it at all...
Though I thought it was ironic that the poster making this claim has no problem denying the Palestinians exist, hence the dit-dits round the word Palestinian...

8. Yeow, that's some powerful stuff
Jeez, I don't even know how to respond to this, other than to say I suspect this guy has some ulterior motive. Either that or he's not really Canadian.

And he really goes overboard on the "all you Americans" bit. I, probably more than most Canadians know that a lot of Americans are not only aware of the problems but are fighting tooth and nail against the problems.

One thing's for sure, he doesn't represent 99.9% of Canadians on this. We disapprove, sure, we're appalled no doubt, but this level of vitriol is a tad over the top.

11. responses...
have you looked at any of the response letters?
from batch 1...
the letter i read was indeed a sad one. not because of slander, or deceptive lies, but because of the truth it held.
       i feel the same way.
this 'land of the free' is so far from the ideals our founding fathers had in mind. a few hundred years ago they dumped tea in the harbour to over through the government for far less than they do to us now.
i am only twenty one, and usually dissmissed for my youth. i had hope once. hope for this nation, hope for humanity....it's gone now. the general public can't fathem how the world must view us.

<snip>

i believe i am a minority f those who care at my age. and if people give in to the numbness as they inch closer to death, who is left to do anything. my generation of go getters, with their 'rock the vote' attitude, doing what ever mtv tells them to?
will i live to see the fall of this great empire? how will we go down in history? it's all a matter of time. but what should i care? besides i think american idol is on.

Specialist C. Williams
United States Army

from batch 2...

It was PERFECT........until it got to the part at the end where it said about Ralph Nader:
"The most honest and conscientious political leader in the country."
Uh, excuse me, but if that were the case then Mr. Nader would not have touted the line "No difference between Bush & Gore." That was a lie in 2000 and it is a lie today. And it cost Democrats over 90,000 votes in Florida. Mr. McDougall's own letter shows just how different they are. And it is because of the "President" we now have in office that the situation is as bad as it is.
But thank you for printing this otherwise brutally honest and factual letter.

RM,
      NYC

looks like they've recieved quite a few messages already... from what i can see about 50 50 as far as agreeing... maybe slightly more agree with the letter, i wasn't interested in counting. Anyway, there's a big mix of opinions, all over the spectrum.

18. I think he made a lot of good points
And you have to remember, this was written in 2002. Remember the mood then? It was considered wrong to speak out against the administration or its policies then, or else you hated America.
