Turnout Strong in Iraqi Elections
Reports of Violence Isolated as Insurgents Suspend Attacks, Encourage Voting
By Ellen Knickmeyer and Jonathan Finer
Washington Post
Thursday, December 15, 2005; 3:30 PM

<...> There were no boycotts this time and insurgents were providing security at some polling places. In Ramadi, for example, guerrillas of the Iraqi Islamic Army movement took up positions in some neighborhoods, promising to protect voters from any attacks by foreign fighters.

1. If true, this is a very good development.

5. I think it has a better chance
If the Americans just fucking pull out before they do so much damage it will ignite. Just GET out and let the Iraqis lose the Jihadis coming in from Saudi and elsewhere.

I wonder which 'foreign' fighters they mean in the statement though.

Because the IIA is notorious for killing US soldiers using IED's and executing hostages.

I am having trouble believing what I read more and more though - in the MSM. Especially the Post.

6. It's a desperate, last ditch effort by the Sunnis
to stave off a Shi'ite theocracy.

2. The domestic insurgents wanted the Sunnis to vote, yeah.
For all the good it'll do them. The process has been good. The results will not likely match.

3. Back in the twenties,
Al Capone's henchmen would "provide security" at Chicago polling places. Just to make sure that everyone voted the "right" way, don't you know.
