YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUIT -- (graphic warning)
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 02:08 AM by LiberalAndProud
Matt 7:15-16 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (KJV)

Dust from American depleted uranium used to give extra heft to bullets is causing birth defects both in Iraqi babies and in babies fathered by American soldiers. It causes permanent genetic damage for generations to come. These pictures are from earlier DU (or possibly other teratogen) damage. The damage from the Iraq war is yet to come.

1. Oh my gosh
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 01:54 AM by FreedomAngel82
So if a young American solider comes back and someday marries and has a family his babies will have it in them too?? All the poor babies. I remember watching this film that was about the effects of 9/11 in children in New York City and in Afghainstan and I remember seeing this one little girl about six I'd say in Afghainstan and she was in school and the teacher was also a psychologist who worked with the kids on mental/emotional problems and every time someone would just casually walk by these group of girls (ages six to nine or so I'd say a guess) they'd get kind of flency. Especially the least little girl. She would almost duck under her desk. It's so sad. (You can find this film on HBO Family).

18. Not nearly as much
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:56 AM by ohio_liberal
It was only used in A-10 30mm rounds in the Balkans. They went apeshit with it in Gulf War 1.0 & 2.0.

edited to add:

According to the WHO, the DoD says 31,000 DU rounds were used in the Balkans, and 783,500 depleted
uranium rounds were fired by A-10 aircraft in the first Gulf War.

6. The human toll is greater than you may think ..
What is Depleted Uranium?
The misnamed 'Depleted' Uranium is left after enriched uranium is separated from natural uranium in order to produce fuel for nuclear reactors. During this process, the fissionable isotope Uranium 235 is separated from uranium. The remaining uranium, which is 99.8% uranium 238 is misleadingly called 'depleted uranium'. While the term 'depleted' implies it isn't particularly dangerous, in fact, this waste product of the nuclear industry is 'conveniently' disposed of by producing deadly weapons.

Depleted uranium is chemically toxic. It is an extremely dense, hard metal, and can cause chemical poisoning to the body in the same way as can lead or any other heavy metal. However, depleted uranium is also radiologically hazardous, as it spontaneously burns on impact, creating tiny aerosolised glass particles which are small enough to be inhaled. These uranium oxide particles emit all types of radiation, alpha, beta and gamma, and can be carried in the air over long distances. Depleted uranium has a half life of 4.5 billion years, and the presence of depleted uranium ceramic aerosols can pose a long term threat to human health and the environment.

http://www.cadu.org.uk/

.. the outrage seems to be hidden from "leaders" .. they don't give a damn. It's like the flouride thing, except much much more devasting. Call it "capitalism".

27. Capitalism - nay.
It is premeditated murder. However, we have seen this before. I am sure we all remember the Roman general Scipio who sacked Carthage. He had it burned to the ground, the population sold into slavery and supposedly had the fields sown with salt. This final act of course was to ensure that Carthage would never again resist the might of Rome.

So in recap:

We have destroyed the Iraqi infrastructure.
We have sown the fields with Monsanto Terminator genetically modified seeds.
We have sown the streets with DU.
We have helped create a new pro-muslim government that is not particularly interested in women’s rights.

So I ask you my fellow Romans - which country dares to resist our collective might next?

7. It started in the first Iraq War
I remember reading an article about DU weapons back then in the only publication that gave a damn: The Village Voice

If you folks would like to learn more about Depleted Uranium weapons, might I recommend the writings and speeches of Dr. Helen Caldicott:

12. Life Magazine November 1995
Has Our Country ABANDONED THEM?
The Tiny Victims of Desert Storm
On the cover U.S. Army Sgt. Paul Hanson and his son Jayce, age three. The child has no arms or legs, born like thalidomide children of the 50's. No graphic warning BTW. Nor should there be. We have to face this as the soldiers come back and so many of them women. I didn't know there were 700,000 soldier for that offense. It is very well written.

Congressmen Bonior and McDermott reported on the DU devastation re: birth defects prior to the October 2002 Resolution on Iraq. They had been told that mothers in Iraq don't ask first if their baby is a boy or a girl ... they ask if it's without defects.

Did these people get the warning before the child came out of the womb?

Most of the pictures on the net of deformed children are mainly from the first GW and the possibility that other chemicals, as well as depleted uranium, may have played a part in the birth defects should be taken into account.

Since the U.S. now uses containment facilities for testing and the storage of depleted uranium seems to be an issue it is hard to believe that DU is safe. More testing and follow up is needed to determine the extent of harmful effects.

Los Alamos Memo

"This memo, issued by LTC Ziehmn of Los Alamos appears to have set the tone for DOD's actions concerning depleted uranium since we came home from the Gulf War.

A quote from the memo:

"If dU penetrators proved their worth during our recent combat acitivities, then we should assure their future existence (until something better is developed) through Service/DOD proponency. If proponency is not garnered, it is possible that we stand to lose a valuable combat capability.

I believe we should keep this sensitive issue at mind when after action reports are written."

Artillery shells, missiles, and bombs encased in DU will penetrate practically anything – tanks, fortified bunkers, hospitals, schools. DU is also radioactive...."

23. Wars always affect future generations
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 05:18 PM by SoCalDem
Women are raped in wartime to kill their spirit, humiliate their powerless menfolk, and to impregnate them with "enemy" children..

Modern science has added a new twist. New evil compounds infiltrate the DNA and permanently alter the women's ability to bear healthy children. Children are a country's future, so even when the war is "over", the legacy lingers..

Southeast Asians are still living with the legacy of Agent orange (as did our own soldiers who were exposed)..

DU is the "new and improved" version ..There will be others.

40 years later there are still landmines all over SE asia, and probably remnants of chemicals we left strewn around, so people qwill never be totally "over' the war.

DU dust is comingled with the soil, and future generations will be dealing with the consequences for a long time too.
