What's your opinion of Bill Maher?
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 04:16 AM by Locut0s
Love him, hate him, or a little of both?

Personally while I definitely don't agree with all of his views I very much respect him and wish there were more people in the media willing to voice their opinions as loudly and freely as he does. It's definitely refreshing to hear him speaking about liberal topics though I find some of his other views grating or even hard to stand.

He's funny and smart. I don't have to agree with him 100% of the time to enjoy his work.

I like him. I'm fond of him actually.

I don't have to agree with every word he says to feel as I do.

7. I like him
One of the better political satirists of our time. I know that he grates on some DUers because he doesn't have a hard line Democratic agenda. I think that makes him more credible.

8. Good point. No political "true-believer" to be found in Mr. Maher.

10. He is not liberal in my view...
but I agree with most of what he says, and the way he says it. Politically Incorrect was a must see for me when it was on, and I thought he got a raw deal from NBC.

12. Nobody can piss me off more, but usually, I agree with him.
When he tried to get a more conservative crowd in the audience, he said some really stupid stuff about Bush actually having the right idea all along, that Iraq would be a happy place, eventually and that was to Bush's credit.

He stopped saying that after he realized that the conservatives wouldn't touch his crowd with a cattleprod :)

I also agree with him 100% on christianity, food and health-related issues, womens issues and racial issues.

Although I think he's way too anti-arab. All arabs beat their wifes and fuck goats, oh harr dee harr harr.

13. He may speak about liberal topics, but He's a LIbertarian
He makes no bones about that. So many here on DU can't stand him at all, while others share your view. I'm one of those.

I can't agree with everything he says, and that's alright. He's on the money enough of the time, he's witty, he's sharp, he's worth watching, and he has some great guests. Like any entertainer, he fumbles it some of the time; all of his shows aren't equally interesting. He's got a pretty darned good track record, though.

Besides, anyone who keeps openly admitting to smoking marijuana AND puts the knock on hypocrisy and stupidity like he does is okay in my book. :smoke:

14. Love hime.Wish I could hook him up.
He seems to be finding the wrong women to date. I can see that he needs a different kind of woman and he doesn't seem to think they exist...I know they do. I think when he does; some of his opinions will change. But; whatever; still love him. He deserves to be happy.

17. hard for a sexist to find a good woman these days. I like most of
what he has to say, but some years ago when I could watch P.I. he made quite a few really rough sexist comments. I now ignore anything he says about women.

18. I think he's just bitter.
I've seen it before. If he gave the right one a chance he would see that most of what he says isn't true. Rings to me of a defense mechanism; I don't take it seriously.

15. He's honest. He may not always be right....
But he doesn't disguise or couch things in a way that he feels will make anyone comfortable just for the sake of them being comfortable. I disagree with him on any number of things but I think he's funny and clever. He's also a heavy mysoginist but again, while I dislike that about him at least he doesn't lie about it or try to claim that he's not. Small comfort, but still.

although occasionally I'm amazed at his wrongheadedness about certain issues. Sometimes I cringe when he says something, but mostly I laugh and I love his take on our government and what a dog and pony show it is.

19. He's a weak little man
His comedy is opportunistic, based on the crowd-pleasing flavor du jour and the thrill he gets from alternately pandering to and shocking his audience. I don't care enough about him to love or hate him. I ignore him.

20. I agree with him on everything except his misogyny
In that respect, I find him to be quite adolescent in his view of women and their 'use' to him. But at least he's honest about it. I like how he admitted that 85% of men don't really want to get married, but 85% of women do, so there's a problem. Many men get pressured into getting married, and do it, and then are cheaters or just plain shitty husbands. He thinks we should all be honest on this front. I think that's actually a pretty good explanation of the whole Sex & the City women-looking-desperately-while-trying-to-keep-hope phenomenon.

I love how he thinks that's what's wrong with this country is that we need to be MORE cynical.

And I think he has become *slightly* more thoughtful in his word choice and presentation, a bit more subdued, since I last saw him (I was living in Europe for four years - used to watch 'Politically Incorrect' almost every night!). He is less acerbic in his presentation. Not a lamb, mind you...

He loses me with the misogynistic comments ... that's where his immaturity comes through. But I still appreciate his willingness to speak directly about what's going on in the world.
