How many DU'ers think that NSA spied on members?
With the report of the bu$h authorized, NSA spying on Americans. How many people here think that the NSA has targeted someone who posts regularly on DU?
Or maybe even all of DU?

Bush authorized NSA to spy on Americans
Agency has monitored hundreds within U.S. since 9/11, newspaper reports

Updated: 11:56 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2005
NEW YORK - President Bush authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States — without getting search warrants — following the Sept. 11 attacks, The New York Times reports.

The presidential order, which Bush signed in 2002, has allowed the agency to monitor the international phone calls and international e-mails of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of people inside the United States, according to a story posted Thursday on the Times’ Web site.

Before the new program began, the NSA typically limited its domestic surveillance to foreign embassies and missions and obtained court orders to do so. Under the post-Sept. 11 program, the NSA has eavesdropped, without warrants, on as many 500 people inside the United States at any given time. Overseas, 5,000 to 7,000 people suspected of terrorist ties are monitored at one time.

My computer locked up about two minutes after I posted that!

Somebody hide me from the hired goons!!!

2. WOW, I didn't mean to step on your toes, liberal N P!
When I checked, I saw no threads on the GWB illegal spying story. Guess I was finishing my own post when you sent yours.

But I hope you feel like me - that the news HAS to get out. (And that we're not competing with each other!) :)

5. If they spied on me, they'd be bored.
Other than the fact that I have terrific sex with my fiance, have fun playing with and reading to my child and chasing my dogs around the neighborhood when they get out of the fence, I'm pretty damn boring. :)

8. My husband and I thought something was
really screwy before the second selection. We were both members of move on too and I wrote many emails before the 2004 primaries trying to get people to see what bush had done. I laid out the time line from 9/11 to the Plame affair. I stated the very things about him that are now being investigated.

Everyday something unusual would happen. The phone acted up, my calls were being forwarded to who knows where. People would call and there were never any messages left when they said they'd left them. My family and friends would get my political emails only on occassion. I felt creepy going into my own house a few times like something was amiss.

There is of course no proof and I have only memories of it as none of the things that were happening happen anymore. I can't say for sure but it certainly is something my husband and I wondered about for a year or so.

10. There's little doubt . . .
. . . that there's some seriously weird stuff happening in Ohio. Clearly, a lot of effort was focused there by the neo-cons and the Diebold mess.

You're a brave lady.

11. Sure
besides coming to this site every day, many political activists gather here. I'm sure that I've been "on a list" for a while-don't even try to fly because of it.

12. Hi, Agent Mike!
Hey, when you come over to check out the three tons of yellowcake I have in my basement (and the 4000 chickens for Project X), could you stop off and pick me up a double cheeseburger, small fries, and a cappuccino? Heck, since it's all expensed anyway, could you stop by the store and pick up a pack or two of ciggybutts and a 12-pack (whatever you like, I'm easy to please, although I prefer Guinness)... ;-)

We just assume that everything we do is watched, and try to make it fun for Special Agent Mike.

19. So was ours
Interesting that you also had connections to MoveOne. Last October I had to get the telephone company out to my house. He could find nothing wrong. He had to go accross the street and do something to the main wires. My mom was at my house at the time and she said after he was over there he told her that someone had done strange things to the wiring for our phone line ONLY. He said he fixed it. We haven't had any trouble since.

22. I'm Wondering About My Computer
I have Firefox & virus protection, & I am supposed to have pop-up ads blocked. But recently, the pop-ups have been getting through. Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be *the spooks*? Eeek!

17. I don't.
Without taking anything away from Democratic Underground, this is ultimately an internet message board. I just don't think it's worthy of the time of the National Security Agency.

18. I've often wondered.
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:08 AM by mmonk
It seems every once in awhile, where I have monitary holdings and medical info, I suddenly get flooded with privacy policy mailings. While policy mailings are nothing unusual, it would seem that they all mail me them at the same time, so I'll get a flood of them at once. I also get strange phone messages on my cell phone voice mail that are internal messages for Sprint technicians and I don't use Sprint. Maybe its just my imagination, but this has occured only in the last two years. I joined DU in 2003.

21. Yes
But it doesn't really bother me. I thought it would, but it doesn't. It's almost like I'm *honored* that they noticed. All my life, I have wanted to stand for something. Now I feel like I am. So hey, no big deal.
I am getting what I wanted. Let them spy. I'm actually pretty harmless :)

23. Probably some DU'ers were included. These folks, along with the
DOD, are spying on American anti-war activists. I always thought I might have a FBI file from the '60's. I keeping telling my family that if they come for me, then everything I've said about our pseudo-fascism was right.

24. I'm Pretty Benign
I haven't done three-fourths of the things people have done here. I'm just starting with this anti-war stuff.
So they would be really bored spying on me: "Oh, she's into anime & goes to anime websites all the time?" Let's see them find something subversive in *that*!
