Hagel says he'll support filibuster of Patriot Act

By DON WALTON / Lincoln Journal Star

Sen. Chuck Hagel said Thursday he is prepared to support a Senate filibuster to prevent reauthorization of a revised Patriot Act.

Legislation devised by a House-Senate conference would threaten civil liberties and “erode individual rights,” Hagel said.

“I would not vote for cloture (ending a filibuster) and would vote against the conference report,” the Republican senator said.

Sen. Ben Nelson, his Democratic colleague, said he’d support a cloture motion.

“In this case, with the provisions of the law expiring at a date certain (more than a dozen provisions of the 2001 law expire on Dec. 31), I believe the Patriot Act deserves an up or down vote,” he said.

24. The Part Where It's More Important Than Rampant Fear
Nelson is just a coward like all the other fools who got so frightened after 9/11. Their fear is blinding them to the real danger.

18. 9 down...
...12 to go. Lean on your Senators. I know I'm going to be E-Mailing Governor-elect Corzine immediately. Let that be his last act in the Senate.

7. Won't the Repubs just delay the vote?
They've done this before. If they're not sure that they'll win, they usually find a way to either delay it or take it off the table.

11. delaying the vote
Yes, that's what they'll probably do. However, certain portions of the Act expire so to delay a vote is the same as allowing a filibuster.

16. Hagel knows that if the neocons get what they want the country
will see the Patriot Act abused and misused. Once the GOP eliminates the last chance congress has to correct the flaws in the Patriot Act, the fascists can do everything they promise not to do to us, in spades. No longer will they need to fear oversight and they will have a free hand to abuse! Trust them? Only a damned FOOL, would still TRUST them.

Any Democrat, or Republican, who supports the Patriot Act as it stands today, does not support, protect, defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America, like they were elected to do. A vote for the Patriot Act, is a vote for a total fascist takeover, IMO.

The enforcement of the Patriot Act, means the terrorists HAVE WON. The US Constitution will in effect, become irrelevant, our legal system will be totally compromised. The President(with the mind of a sadistic, smirking, arrogant ape) will become the King.

22. This is excellent
There really is some hope that our senate will stand up for the people, and actually do their job of upholding the constitution. I am in shock.

I was just reading about Senator Mike Gravel, does anyone here remember him? He had a solo filibuster back in 1971 FOR FIVE MONTHS! demanding an end to the draft. He won, Nixon finally had to back down due to embarrassment. During that time, as criminals behind the scene were working to shut down any reporting on the pentagon papers, he read them into congressional record.

Here's to hope
:toast:
