Residency Requirement waived for NOLA Police and firefighters
Police and fire fighters in New Orleans were required to live in the city to hold their job but the city council yesterday waived that requirement for three years. The overriding reason is that most police and fire fighters now have nowhere to live in the city with their homes being destroyed by the hurricane. Many have been living on a cruise ship on the Mississippi River with their families scattered throughout the country. They can now find homes outside the city to live.

I also heard on NPR about the fight going on between the entire City Council and Nagin about the placement of trailers within the city. I need to read more about it.
They did take a damn long time to come up with a fairly easy and obvious solution. I'm not a city resident but sometimes I think the city council is comprised of a bunch of camera seeking prima donnas. Mayor Nagin is getting crap from all sides, being called a racist by black and whites alike so he must be something right. I think the placement of trailors comes down to "not in my neighborhood." But there are silly things like utility hookups to consider. As one resident recently put it so nicely, "we just want to get back to abnormal."

I know one of the city councilpersons, Jackie Clarkson, who represents the French Quarter and Algiers. I haven't talked to her in a long while though. Maybe I should find out firsthand from her.
After Katrina and before Rita she held a ribbon cutting on the westbank for some civic building reopening that rubbed some folks the wrong way. She does have a presence. I think she is running for councilman at large next time. Peggy Wilson may run for Mayor and there has been stories about LTGOV Mitch Landrieu running for Mayor. GOV Blanco has temporarily called off New Orleans elections scheduled for February. I don't know if that's the best idea.
