My Red Wing Shoes
I went in search of new shoes that are Made in USA and found only one brand readily available, Red Wing. So I looked up the address to a local store and resolved to visit someday. The day came soon enough, and I did visit, but I was broke at the time so could not buy a pair that day.

I did learn they have wide selection for everyone, including some new brands that are actually imported. To be fair, a style I really like was one of these imports, but my criteria was that they had to be Made in USA, so my selection was limited to the Red Wing brand. This is turned out to be no problem as the selection is wide, and nearly anything can be ordered.

Well, a few weeks later I came into some money and remember how much I like the shoes and want a pair so I returned to the store. I found a black loafer style I like and it was available with a steel toe. Since I have been riding my bike more often in city traffic, it gives me a seeming measure of security in that I may just haul off and kick one of those rude drivers that “doesn’t see me” in the crosswalk or on the side of the road when they turn in front of me, so I want those steel toes. I digress.

The price tag seemed steep, $150 – but I learned the shoes were guaranteed for life, including the stitching, laces and even polish. I tried them on and liked the feel. I had them measure my feet with that measure thing that used to be present at every shoe store and confirmed one foot is a bit larger than the other, just as one leg is I guess. They have some in stock, but without the steel toes, so I will have to pay and wait a week to get the ones I want. Well, I have waited this long, I am willing to wait a few more days. I paid and order my new Red Wing Shoes.

Soon I got a call that my shoes were there! I picked them up right away and have worn them several weeks now so I can tell anyone that wants to know that these shoes are great! In fact, these are surely the best shoes I have ever owned. I can already tell I will be a lifelong customer of Made in USA Red Wing Shoes, it is well worth the extra cost, trouble and wait for me.

1. I'll second that...
We're fortunate enough to have a Red Wing store across the street from our home. My husband bought a pair of boots there last year, and they've performed wonderfully, and they look great.

Buy Red Wing!

8. My boyfriend wears those. He wears them OUT, too.
They're good shoes, but by the end of the year (sometimes sooner) the soles crack in half and the rubber falls off. He does take advantage of their guarantee but he had to go through some extensive BS with one of the clerks last time, if I remember correctly.

I'm not trying to discourage you from buying them--even with the cracked soles he says they're the only shoes he'll buy. (Which is probably why he wears them out so fast--they're his only pair of shoes, and he wears them every single day.) I'm glad you were successful in your search for shoes--enjoy.

13. Drag Racing
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 10:34 AM by 90-percent
About 10 Years ago, Red Wing got involved with the Austin family out of Seattle, in both Top Fuel and Alcohol Funny Car.

They really used drag racing heavily in their marketing for a while, which I really appreciated, being a fan and all that.

10. Mason Shoes
which are sold via catalog, contains a mixture of made in the USA and foreign made shoes. My husband just got a pair of made in the USA boots, but he had to look through the shop (mom and pop, natch)to find them. Glad to know Redwing is consistantly USA, though.

14. So I guess the workers making them in 3ed world countries should head

back to the farm, desert or hills? No humane reason to ever buy anything that helps them better their lives?

15. If I want to help people in a third-world country, the first thing I'd do
wouldn't be buying their cheaply made crap.

I'd rather send my money directly to a needy family.

And what about the needy families working right here in the US that need some help?

28. No you weren't
You were talking about the people that makes goods imported by the USA. Combine all the imports from the countries you just mentioned, and it equals what we import from China every half hour or so.

29. very sorry to have thought I controlled my thoughts

I guess you will have to give me your e-mail address so I can be sure to be told what I am talking about when I speak or type something. I understand the problems with working conditions in certain places, I was talking about people who are working somewhere because they want to be working there and because it gives them a chance to earn a living and a chance to better their and their family's lives.

The whole "buy US made" concept just sometimes reaks of a movie character that was running for president with the slogan "God bless America, and no place else!"

17. I love my Red Wing boots!
I just bought a new pair about 3 weeks ago. About $150, but I know they'll last for years. I think the last pair lasted for five years. I've bought the cheap imports in the past too, and the Red Wings cheaper in the long run, because the cheapies wear out in 6-12 months on a construction site.
I also love the Red Wings, because they're "broken in" when you first put them on.

22. I'm Having A Pair Made In Omaha Right Now
For not much more money than that I am having a pair of boots custom made in Omaha even as we speak.

There are still places around that do it, other than the ones This make cowboy boots of course. I spend a lot of time outdoors so I'm having a pair of lace-up work boots made. The process is simple enough. You go to their website and find a model they make you like, take a look at the options (sole and heel materials, type of leather, all sorts of things that I never knew about), choose what you want, then the good part. You get someone to take your foot measurements for you. Can't do it yourself, has to be someone else. You measure in 7 places, mark it all down on the order form (which also includes instructions on where and how to measure) and then stand on the order form and have someone outline your foot right over top of it. You flip it over and do the other foot next. The company requires a deposit with the order. It takes a while to get them - my order confirmation (which indicated they assigned the job to a Cordwainer (my word, not theirs) on November 11th, that the serial number would be such and such, and that I might expect to see the boots at some time between 14 and 18 weeks following aforementioned date. Thank you very much. www.dehner.com Mine are to be the laced ones on the right:

By the way, that's not so much a plug for the company, because there are several other small boot makers around who do the same thing with the same level of quality. Its really just a way to point out that if you want it made in the USA, want real craftsmanship, and are willing to pay just a little bit more that such things are available.

25. I had some mocs made this way
I met a family that made custom mocassins on foot powered sewing machines! Greywolf did comprimise to technology when he wrapped my foot in duct-tape then sliced it where the moc is open to use as a pattern. Deer antler fasteners, and conveyor belt soles make these great mocs I will treasure always and try not to wear out!

It's too bad that we have a difficult time finding any products that are made in the USA.

Here's a testimonial from a happy customer...

THE BOOTS ARE TOO GOOD

I would like to make a complaint about your boots.

Having bought a pair over 6 years ago I found them to be the most comfortable boots I have ever worn.
After wearing them almost daily for the first couple of years I decided I would like to have a second pair for work. I mentioned this to my wife but she thought that because they were a little bit expensive that I should continue to wear my existing pair until they started to wear out and then I could use them for work and buy a new pair for good.

Well this is where my complaint lies. After 6 years of misuse and abuse of my boots they still don’t look even close to being worn out so I am still no closer to getting another pair.

Prior to owning a pair of Redwings I was lucky if a pair of boots would last me a year, which just goes to prove that quality is well worth paying for.

Thanks for making a great pair of quality boots (which will hopefully wear out one day so I will be allowed to buy another pair).

24. A year later
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 11:13 AM by aztc
I actually wrote that article a year ago, when I first got the shoes. Since then I have been back for shoelaces twice and plan to buy a pair of boots soon.

One of the few bright spots in my overall empirically confirmed cynical view of things, I am very happy to confirm this is an American business of the sort I am familiar with, proud of, and will patronize as long as their values remain the same.

Amtrak serves Red Wing, MN :)
