CONdosleeza Rice oversaw illegal domestic spying on American citizens!
The next repuke presidential nominee oversaw illegal spying of THOUSANDS of private American citizens randomly.

(Washington DC, Dec. 16) - Months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without the court-approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials.

Under a presidential order signed in 2002, the intelligence agency has monitored the international telephone calls and international e-mail messages of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people inside the United States without warrants over the past three years in an effort to track possible "dirty numbers" linked to Al Qaeda, the officials said. The agency, they said, still seeks warrants to monitor entirely domestic communications.

The previously undisclosed decision to permit some eavesdropping inside the country without court approval was a major shift in American intelligence-gathering practices, particularly for the National Security Agency, whose mission is to spy on communications abroad. As a result, some officials familiar with the continuing operation have questioned whether the surveillance has stretched, if not crossed, constitutional limits on legal searches.

"This is really a sea change," said a former senior official who specializes in national security law. "It's almost a mainstay of this country that the N.S.A. only does foreign searches." Nearly a dozen current and former officials, who were granted anonymity because of the classified nature of the program, discussed it with reporters for The New York Times because of their concerns about the operation's legality and oversight.

According to those officials and others, reservations about aspects of the program have also been expressed by Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, the West Virginia Democrat who is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and a judge presiding over a secret court that oversees intelligence matters. Some of the questions about the agency's new powers led the administration to temporarily suspend the operation last year and impose more restrictions, the officials said.

25. Yup... They Wire Tapped Them To See How They
would vote on a Resolution. Once they had enough info telling them it wasn't going to happen, Bush pulled out of the uN and illegally invaded Iraq.

GCHQ translator cleared over leak

A GCHQ translator sacked for revealing a secret e-mail has been cleared of a charge under the Official Secrets Act.

Katharine Gun, 29, from Cheltenham, claimed the e-mail was from US spies asking British officers to tap phones of nations voting on war against Iraq.

She walked free on Wednesday when the prosecution offered no evidence.

<snip>

The leaking of the e-mail to the Observer newspaper generated a row and saw Ms Gun's case become a cause celebre in the US, with civil rights activist Jesse Jackson and actor Sean Penn lending their support.

8. Err - Condi probably knew about it but she would not have "overseen" it .
She was head of the National Security Council, not the National Security Agency.

Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 10:50 AM by In Truth We Trust
nsc is various cabinet level persons and president v president etc.
Sleeza was the NSA chief. She would be aware of her own agency's illegal spying on American citizens?!?

12. I am saying it is incorrect to say that she "oversaw" the spying. That
would be the Director of the NSA. Saying Condi "oversaw" the NSA would be like saying she oversaw the CIA. No, both the CIA and the NSA are part of the Intelligence Community and they would provide intelligence and analysis to the NSC but they are not under direct oversight of the NSC. The NSC doesn't control their budget, for example.

13. You are mistaken.. She was head of national security agency (nsa) see link
From white house biography. So she DID Oversee this illegal spying. Do a simple google biography search and you will learn. Arrest her NOW!!!

"Dr. Condoleezza Rice became the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, commonly referred to as the National Security Advisor, on January 22, 2001."

She may well likely spend the rest of her days in prison for high treason.

Would justice serve that those "responsible" walk the plank.

15. Sigh....Please look again. It does not say that. National Security
Affairs, National Security Advisor, National Security Council, etc - not the same as being the head of the NSA. The NSA has a Director just like the other government intelligence agencies do. And the Director of the NSA is NOT the National Security Advisor. I agree that Condi probably knew about this but it is incorrect to say she was head of the NSA. She was not.

18. Can you even read? She wasn't part of the National Security Agency!
She was National Security Advisor, completely different animal!

That being said, I think the gapped tooth moron should be put in jail for gross incompetence, lying, and being downright ugly. But that has nothing to do with the NSA.

29. Condi was in fact the subject of an NSA/DIA investigation called Able
Danger. Remember that one? An AD project allegedly linked her to a Chinese espionage ring when she was at Stanford in the 1990s. This was cited as one of the reasons that AD was shut down and its files scrubbed.

Ironic, isn't it - even if Condi as NSA never ran the NSA.
