spent time "protecting the symbols of Christmas" but couldn't find time to deal with Katrina recovery?

11. How better to honor the Spirit of Christmas
than to show compassion for the Katrina survivors. It also honors Jewish,Muslim, and humanitarian principles. Shame on every member of Congress who does not make this a priority. While they babble on about store clerks saying "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", people are living in tents, the weather is cold and rainy, and they've lost everything. I doubt many of them feel too much "merriment".

To abandon them now, while spending taxpayer's dollars to debate a religious holiday, is a betrayal of everything this country is supposed to stand for. Everybody who is able to forget, and write off, so many of their fellow Americans, their fellow HUMAN BEINGS, is the worst kind of phony patriotic hypocrite.

12. i'm calling them all!
no answer at barrow's office.

the staffers are surprised but appropriately attentive cuz i'm telling them

"even though i'm in california, i AM aware that Congressperson ___ is up for re-election. i want to impress upon the congressperson that the world is watching. as americans we care about our countrymen and the disaster that has befallen them. these people were truly victims -- and now they are survivors. they NEED congress to take action to get them help. living in CA i can relate to what life could be like -- what if there was an earthquake here? remember too, many of the survivors didn't just lose material things, but they also lost loved ones, they lost the lives they once knew. they need something more than the empty words spouted by the president in the aftermath.

tell your congressperson that i found it repugnant that congress spent their time arguing about xmas symbols rather than addressing this critical issue. i want the congressperson to stand up and see that the hurricane survivors get the attention they need BEFORE recessing for xmas....if not, we will see that people in the state of ___ know about what their congress person's priorities are. we're taking names and numbers on this because this really matters!

22. ooh...who's got chet edwards for congressman?
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 03:21 PM by sojourner
his office staff was downright hostile! So also faxed a letter!

Dear Congressman Edwards:

I called your offices today, speaking to an “efficient” but remote-sounding Mr. ___. I was a little taken back by Mr. ___’s manner, and wanted to ask whether this is the impression you want to make on callers – as I was really offended by his unprofessional demeanor.

Perhaps Mr. ___ was not fond of the reason for my call: I am asking that you, as a member of Congress, step up to the plate in seeing that Congress provide funding and relief to the survivors of Katrina. I see from your campaign website that your district hosted evacuees of Rita. My hope is that you are in tune with the needs of these American citizens, and those impacted by Katrina. You can demonstrate this by supporting legislation that provides help to our countrymen in a time of dire need.

Even though I am not a constituent, I am an American and on issues like this one, more Americans than ever are “taking names and numbers” related to the actions of congressional representatives. We are watching Congress, and we are committed to seeing that your stand on this issue is broadcast for all to see.

I hope, as the time for Congress breaks for Christmas approaches, that you will take a moment to ask whether you are minding the savior’s words: “…’Lord, when did I see you hungry and naked and without shelter?’ and I will reply, ‘Truly I say unto you, to the extent that you did it to the least of these…you did it to me.’”

Today people are fond of speaking about “taking responsibility”. Well, I don’t know about you, but I doubt the victim/survivors of Katrina invited that hurricane. I also doubt that they invited the suffering that has been visited upon them. I do know that you and I must take responsibility for our action (or lack of it!) to provide the assistance they need.

It is four months since the disaster struck. People are still displaced and in shock. Many have lost, not just material things, but loved ones, their livelihood, their entire way of life. They need and they deserve more than the platitudes served up by the Administration. They need a Congress that will spend its valuable time taking care of the needs of the people it represents – not arguing over how/whether to protect the symbols of Christmas.

Respectfully,
