Amazing how that NYT article on spying on the people came out
just in time to be read and passed around before this Patriot Act vote. Just a thought, but it was timely and served the public well. They sat on it a year, I've heard.

1. really?
I wasn't aware of that. But I'm glad it came out when it did-perhaps it persuaded the few Republicans who voted no on cloture not to support the PA. Some of them must be smart enough to know that they won't always be in power, and that they don't want their lives invaded for political purposes.

2. Why would they sit on this story for a whole year?
what motive would they have. I would be interested to know if they were scared up until this point to print this story or what....

5. The WH asked them to sit on it
wonder how it would have effected the election.

8. Makes you wonder just what all is sitting out there
waiting to be printed. Didn't an Ohio newspaper have some report that they have been sitting on? I think we shall see more and more of these reports...

9. Yes, we will. And when Fitzgerald gets finished
with his investigation, we'll probably know a LOT more.

and subsequent embarrassment of the NYT, the whole NYT WMD screw up and letting stuff go right for * before an important presidential election. Umm, they were quite busy doing Orwellian press practices that destroyed the public trust.

If the NYT had this and did not report it well what's one more journalistic malpractice on their part. The NYT may have a score to settle with bush for making them look so bad. x(

Risen claims the White House asked the paper not to publish the article, saying that it could jeopardize continuing investigations and alert would-be terrorists that they might be under scrutiny

7. The article says they held the story.
It seems as a compromise to the administration who wanted them to kill the story.

11. I think that if they were trying to sway lawmakers on the Patriot Act,

that they would have released it before the house had their vote. I think the admin demanded them to hold the story due to what they perceived as a breach of national security.

13. Yeah, how about that! Still playing with the news people receive.
I have to wonder how John Kerry feels about this all coming out after a year. This is what the repubs call the liberal press?

14. Just selling a book

Newspaper fails to inform readers "news break" is tied to book publication

On the front page of today's NEW YORK TIMES, national security reporter James Risen claims that "months after the September 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States... without the court approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials."

Risen claims the White House asked the paper not to publish the article, saying that it could jeopardize continuing investigations and alert would-be terrorists that they might be under scrutiny.

Risen claims the TIMES delayed publication of the article for a year to conduct additional reporting.

But now comes word James Risen's article is only one of many "explosive newsbreaking" stories that can be found -- in his upcoming book -- which he turned in 3 months ago!

The paper failed to reveal the urgent story was tied to a book release and sale.
