1. I'd cheer them on
with letters saying they are doing the right thing. But I wouldn't give them money or vote for them.

3. No
First of all, they never will. Second, not many of them exist.

They are too afraid to lose favor with the puritanical rightist base to which the Far Right also appeals. They don't want to appear so moderate that their public gives up on the word Republican altogether.

If they're so disgusted with their own party, they should have drummed up the guts to actually switch parties a long time ago. If they're only willing to dissent from their own party at the last minute, or only when things have gotten really bad, that doesn't give me much faith in their collective initiative and backbone.

I'd still be very suspiscious of them.

4. I'd cheer them but not join them
Make no mistake, I sympathise with decent Eisenhower Repugs and earnest if wrong Goldwater Reugs on the hijacking of their party by Ronald Reagan's handing it over to the religious nut jobs and the neoclassical economists bent on stripmining the whole country for the benefit of only 0.5% of its people, but I'll never join them.

We often want the same things, but have diametrically opposed ways of going about achieving them.

I do hope they get their party back, and I do believe they will once some wack job like defrocked judge Roy Moore starts a fundagelical party because the pubbies aren't pure enough to suit him.

More than that, though, I want my party back. Once the GOP goes back to being a bunch of fuddy duddies who are afraid of change, maybe the DLC will go back to the pubbies.

5. Absolutely!
especially if they went back to a belief on fiscal responsibility and anti-corruption.
