"Our culture seems more comfortable with the F-word than the C-word,"
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3313807

As Eric Christen prepared for this week's District 11 school board meeting, he glanced at the official district calendar and noticed the words "Winter break" used to describe the last week of December. Closer inspection of the box for Dec. 25 revealed that it contained only a graphic of a Christmas tree.

<snip>

About 800 lawyers have pledged to work this year to help the group combat what it considers improper censorship of Christmas expression in schools and other public settings.

Dobson's ministry, Focus on the Family, has not launched a campaign over Christmas, but leaders are sympathetic to school board members such as Christen and Bartha.

"Our culture seems more comfortable with the F-word than the C-word," said Alex McFarland, director of teen apologetics for Focus. "We do a disservice to children when we use grammatical gymnastics to avoid saying the obvious."

5. It's a giant leap from "winter break" to "fuck", I'd say.
What does societal use of swear words have to do with the official language of the school calendar? Did Mr. Christen perhaps JUST notice that schools typically take winter breaks? Is this a new concept to him?

years ago about "Halloween." We had to change it to Fall Harvest. I am getting tired of all these Fund Raising Fundie Tantrums.

18. This is the same guy who says Katrina was "God judging human sin"
http://hnn.us/roundup/entries/16429.html

These people -- and there are countless similar examples -- view God as a brutal killer of the innocent -- the equivalent of a national leader who orders the use of weapons of mass destruction against cities filled with civilians.

"God did create a perfect world," Rev. Alex McFarland of James Dobson's Focus on the Family said after Katrina struck. "But we humans introduced moral evil, sin, rebellion and disobedience. And after God judged human sin in Noah's flood, the weather patterns that we know today developed."

21. you know, I'm a Christian, and this issue is beyond stupid...
If people don't want to say "Merry Christmas" fine. If people would prefer "Happy Holidays" in stores, well, fine they have that right. If a store decides to keep "Merry Christmas" fine, that's their right too. If somebody decides to not shop there for that reason, then that's pretty petty if you ask me, I don't know a single good person who would do otherwise. I have never met a person in my life, no matter what their beliefs were, who flipped out if somebody wished them a "Merry Christmas." Nor have I, as a Christian, ever been insulted if somebody wished me a "Happy Holidays."

Seriously, our country really needs to grow up. When words start taking precedent over 40 million people in poverty, 40 million without health care, our schools and our security, then I would have to say there is a problem. This issue is an individual issue. Not a mass issue. If people want to express their love of Christ good for them, if they want to spread the word, that's good too. If some people don't celebrate the holidays like that, well, that's their right to do so. I don't care so much what somebody believes as long as they are a good and just person. An expression, either way, is an expression. Why start some huge fight over it? It's foolish and devisive.

22. Are the holidays of all religions on the school calendar? If not, then
I hope someone counter-sues. Or maybe they could just change the calendar to say, "Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, New Year's Day Break" although they might need a larger calendar.
