25. I'm Christian and say Merry Christmas

And I wish my Jewish friends "Happy Hanukkah." I'm sure I've said Merry Christmas to people I didn't know were Jewish, only once did a guy say "thanks but I'm Jewish," the world didn't end, we didn't have a fist fight or shouting match, I simply said "oh, Happy Hanukkah," he said "Merry Christmas."

I am also sure I have said it to atheists, never had anyone say anything about being an atheists when I've said it so they either accepted it as well wishes, a greeting that includes a reference to something they enjoy without religious aspects, or just didn't care that I had said it.

26. or they didn't want to have a confrontation with you?
that's what i usually do when someone wishes me merry christmas, just smile. but really i find it annoying and if i'm feeling snarky i usually say, 'thanks but i'm not christian - merry christmas to you though'

i guess the offensive thing is that christians seem to assume everyone else is too - or SHOULD be.

28. I wouldn't be a problem

I can understand the wishing to avoid confrontations. You never know what can happen. I have friends who are atheist and refrain from religious greetings or wishes with them. As far a stranger informing of this, I would let them know I meant no offense and wish them a good day, evening, weekend, or whatever is appropriate.

i say it to jews, i say it to muslims. then i think, why the fuck am i saying that? i know it isn't really jesus' birthday, i know it is really yule & saturnalia that i celebrate. but i do it because i was raised catholic & that's what you say.

9. I say "Happy Holidays" because Christmas isn't the only one
and there's a whole slew of them to recognize.

Christians don't own winter and they don't own all the holidays. Until they stake their claim and cancel Hannukah, Kwanzaa and New Year's, I'll issue a blanket greeting for all of them.

Of course, "Merry Christmas" is appropriate on Christmas Day.

Perhaps some Christians need to recognize that excluding everybody else on the planet from good wishes is not a particularly good idea. It certainly isn't winning them any friends.

11. I'm a liberal and a Christian
and I say "Happy Holidays." At least to people I do not know or groups where non-Christians might be present. It's the polite thing to do. It has nothing to do with wanting to get rid of Christmas. What an ignorant, childish, gullible bunch who believe this hogwash. I have a Christmas nativity scene in my yard, for crying out loud but no....I'm sure someone out there thinks I must be trying to do away with Christmas because they can't force me to be impolite to my non-Christian friends and acquaintances.

But I don't have a problem with Christians saying Merry Christmas (even then you did steal our holiday). I even say Christmas when talking about this season to non-pagans, so they don't get confused.

19. Merry Christmas-for me that isn't really the point
The point is...who cares

I love how this exposes HOW they take an issue and some loosely connected "facts" and make them into their issue. Frame it if you will. Their Schiavo selfindulgence exposed this to the light of the mass public and again they are doing it again. This isn't a case of being drunk with power or their unfortuneate position of being in power (and no longer being able to just bluster and whine about what they WOULD DO if in power) this is their playbook. It always has been. This is what they do. And it is damned funny to see it ripped open.

31. This "war on Christmas" BS is a rightwing engineered '15 minute hate'
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 05:07 PM by impeachdubya
against those of us who are NOT Christian.

I'm willing to bet that there has not been one single verifiable incident of an atheist or secular humanist 'blowing a gasket' because someone, somewhere, said "Merry Christmas". Aside from the fact that it's not offensive, most of us really have bigger fish to fry.

The whole bogus 'issue', if you can call it that, has been flatulated by certain FOX News anchors and others as a wedge in the culture war, over the fact that clerks at certain stores say "happy holidays".. and certain stores advertise "holiday sales".

NEWS FLASH: That's not "new", nor is it 'bigotry'. It's a simple, inclusive, capitalist acknowledgment of the fact that stores have millions of potential customers in this country, like Jews, who might celebrate something other than Christmas. The fact that you even think it's an issue makes me think that maybe you've been spending a little too much time listening to those 'hack shows'. They'd rather talk about mean ol' secular humanists snatching Christmas out of the hands of tots than, say, the deficit, or the iraq war, or the fact that the polar caps are melting.. wonder why?

And some of us who can't stand that 'mother fucker', as you put it, do NOT believe in "God", at least the version promulgated by the western monotheistic religions. While I appreciate your not wanting to be stereotyped or lumped in with 'us', (even though I think we're far better company than the bile-spewers on your 'hack shows' and freep boards) I also don't intend to get to the back of the bus or shut up about my lack of belief, just because it leads stupid fuckin' freeps to say that ALL Democrats are "Godless". Tough fuckin' titty.

That said, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Buon Kwanzaa, and have a Super, Smokin' Saturnalia Solstice. Really.

44. I sure haven't seen it

I've been to the mall and to other shopping centers--I sure haven't seen anything.
I've been wished Merry Christmas.
I've been wished Happy Holidays.
I've been given "Go to hell-my feet hurt and I have to close again tonight" looks...but nowhere in my adventures has there been any controversy.
However, I will have to comment...I have seen very FEW Salvation Army bellringers this season. That has surprised me. My daughter spent a couple days ringing the bell--I guess with all of the hurricanes, there aren't many volunteers to ring bells.
