Jack Cafferty is going OFF
Wow. In speaking about the Patriot Act renewal's failure in the Senate today, Jack said

"Who cares if the Patriot Act is renewed or not? Want to spy on Americans? Just do it.

Who cares about the Geneva Conventions? You want to torture prisoners? Just do it.

Who cares about covert CIA agents? You want to leak the name of an American spy? Just do it.

Who cares about pre-war intelligence? You want to invade Iraq? Just do it."

Excellent rant, Jack. Excellent.

11. Awesome!
Criticize one of the few people in the news willing to be bold in their truthful statements. Harp on one of the only guys to mirror what is being discussed here. Cool!

22. Huh?
I'm guessing you were criticizing my criticism of Cafferty? I don't care for all that he has to say. He is just as likely to inexplicably hop on the bush bandwagon as to criticize bush. Sure, it's cool with me when he talks like he evidently did today (I didn't see or hear any of it), as I agree with that cogent criticism of the bush misadministration. But he is a frustrating flip-flopper, on issues that seem as clear to me as this one seems to him.

24. When was the last time Cafferty flip-flopped on Iraq?
Sure, he speaks on some issues just as if he was a supporter of the Coward, but he has been extremely critical on Iraq and related issues, on a very consistent basis for a year or so.

29. I don't know. I don't catch "Hit & Run" in the afternoons too often ...
... although I used to see him every morning he was on the morning CNN show (American Morning?), and he seemed to be pro-bush as often as anti-bush. I do not think of him as a consistent truth-seeker when it comes to bush, at least not over the years bush has been in office. Perhaps he has changed his tune somewhat, since Hurricane Katrina, and as bush's war has dragged on.

Even the GOP sees some use for him, though, re: his recent comments about bush's speeches:
Cafferty: "I Thought He Was Terrific. ... He Was Good This Morning. ... The Commander In Chief Acted Like One. He Was Confident And Convincing And His Speechwriters Left The Word Nuclear Out Of The Text." (CNN's "The Situation Room," 11/30/05)
... and ...
Cafferty: "I Learned Some Stuff That I Didn't Know Before About How They Planned To Achieve Victory Over There. There Were Specific Examples Cited Of Some Of The Progress Being Made In Iraq. ... It Was Good To See The President Get His Fastball Back. He Was Good This Morning." (CNN's "The Situation Room," 11/30/05)
http://www.gop.com/News/Read.aspx?ID=5960

These aren't intellectually disciplined comments about bush and his Iraq policy; they ignore that much of what these speeches contained was rehashed text from previous speeches and talking points. Check out who the other quotes are from. The GOP would certainly like to make it sound as though Cafferty is in their camp (given his recent criticism of bush), as Blitzer seems to be, but they are both lumped in mostly with water-carriers for bush.

In the lead-up to the 2004 election I grew weary of hearing the CNN morning crew lavish praise on bush most mornings. It seemed obvious, and was a subject of discussion on DU. Cafferty was most vocal in his adulation.

On a somewhat related subject, I remember this exchange, as reported here:
http://www.alternet.org/columnists/story/20714/
"As co-anchor of CNN's morning program, Cafferty had something to report on March 31: 'It's a red-letter day here in America,' he said. 'Air America, that communist radio network, starts broadcasting in a little while.' Cafferty was unyielding when CNN colleague Soledad O'Brien responded by saying that the new talk-radio network was not communist but liberal. He replied: 'Well. Aren't they synonymous?'"

I was left thinking, "What the hell am I watching? Whatever happened to decency in 'news' reporting?"

To me, watching Cafferty has become an exercise in pain and pleasure. Even with his recent tough monologues against bush-related interests, I expect him to slide right back into blind praise at any moment. That seems to be his pattern, part of his "curmugeon" shtick.

20. More Cafferty....
He's now reading the responses to his question of the day, "Should the US Government be allowed to spy on its citizens without a warrant?"

Before reading the letters, he answered his own question with a curt, "You've got to be freaking kidding me."

Now, he's making an issue of the NYT sitting on the story for a year, agreeing with a reader who wrote, "This is the kind of information Americans deserved to know before the 2004 election."

Jack didn't read a single letter in support of the Administration's spying policy. Wolfie looked uncomfortable at the end of the segment.
