Have you heard of Americans Standing Against Brokeback Mountain?
They trully exist and are trying to boycott the film in the 'Heartland'.

"We, as American people, have values and morals based on our upbringing, our faith, and our beliefs. These morals have led us to believe that homosexuality is wrong, or at least should not be solicited by the Hollywood agenda. Because of this belief, we are boycotting the viewing of 'Brokeback Mountain', a movie which follows two married men and their homosexual life. The movie will actually show gay sex. We are asking others to support a boycott of this movie, and we want the world to know that we are standing against what Hollywood is doing. By signing this petition, you are telling Hollywood that you are standing against their agenda, and against this movie."

2. no
I think anyone can start one of these online petitions in about three minutes. Then they post about it in Freeperville, a few hundred chumps sign up, and that's the end of it.

I doubt Americans blah-blah Brokeback Mountain has a legal team, or an organizing arm, or a research crew, or anything else worth paying attention to.

17. They need to leave the whole country alone
I'm starting to get very sick and tired to them trying to tell me what "christianity" is all about. My religious choices are none of their business.

4. Good!
As a straight, middle age American male living in the "Heartland", this will make me feel even better when I go to see it with my wife, knowing that somehow I am pissing off even more these "values" :puke: idiot bush-bots. Hey, I'm a sucker for a good romance story.

12. I can't locate a theater in Arkansas that is currently showing it. I read
that it will be shown in Little Rock starting in January. That's only 220 miles away, but oh well, I just might get a bunch of folks and go see it.

5. No, but Nathan Lane was hilarious about it
this morning on the Today Show, something I usually avoid but it was 45 degrees in this place at 7 AM and I was cowering under the quilt and bored.

Thanks to his take on that movie, I'm just going to have to see it when it comes out on DVD.

In the meantime, anything that pisses off the Calvinists is fine with me.

30. just can't get past the sex can they
it shows a genuinely moving love-that-cannot-be-yet-is love story between two humans. What it shows is that love doesn't care what sex you are. What it shows is that pain and heartbreak and life don't care what sex you are.

This made up love story is plausible precisely because the kind of people who "boycott gay movies" exist for real.

I saw it last night and I'm still all verklempt. Pass me a hankie.

7. You don't "boycott" a movie!
You can boycott a theater, if you like. But simply not going to see a movie doesn't mean much. Who sees ALL the movies?

Father Ted tried it & the movie was a hit on Craggy Island!

29. They also play into BBM's maker's hands.
One thing filmakers have discovered over the years, that these cretins can't simply figure out is...

There's no such thing as bad publicity!!!! Idiots!

Look at some of the other dangerous Hollywood output they cried about

Midnight Cowboy- (homosex) Oscar Winner
Goldfinger- (Innuendo & violence) spawning the ratings system and 16 or so sequels
The Exorcist- (Blasphemy) Box office cash to spare
Dog Day Afternoon- (HOMOS!) critical acclaim and classic status
Making Love- (MORE Homos!) Piece of shit story that got more money than it deserved.
Blue Lagoon- (Under age floozy with no clothes on) WAY TO MUCH MONEY for what this POS deserved.
Indecent Proposal- (high priced married call girl) Really. Boycotting Demi Moore just encourages her to show her no talent, cry-on-demand face again.

My favorite... Last Temptation of Christ. What was a low budget art house flick, made on the cheap by Scorsese because of his love of the story, was so blown out of proportion, it became a major hit, and is an all time classic.

9. Is it a boycott if you weren't going to see it anyway?
I can't see the people who boycott a gay-themed movie being a big audience for gay-themed movies in the first place.

11. Why do they feel the need to raise a stink about it?
If you don't want to see it or your kids to see it, then don't go see it. What's with all these petitions and crap. It just furthers the news coverage and ratings of the film.

21. Well, I live in the Heartland. . .and this kid doesn't represent
anyone but himself. I'm really tired of these insecure people who are incapable of taking their own position without projecting it on others. It's nothing but narcissism - if they paraded around alone with a point of view and no one supported them, they'd fold in a minute. Spineless freeper.

And I doubt the petition gatherer has lived long enough to really form an identity of his own, anyway.

14. Movie boycotts inevitably draw attention -- and viewers
Nothing like a boycott by fundies to turn a blah movie in to a blockbuster ("Passion of the Christ", anyone?) What it will do to a great movie like "Brokeback Mountain"... I can hardly wait!

2 guys named Justin and Steve. Wassa matter fellas, did that icky movie make you squirm? Did your buddy notice you were getting hot and bothered by it? That's right, you either bust out of your closet or the pressure makes you post rabidly anti gay stuff all over the internet to get it out of your system.

20. A lot of folks on the nutcase Right appear to be afraid of --
-- pee-pees.

Cowboy pee-pees must be especially menacing to them.

Haven't seen the film yet but the more the Right yelps about how immoral it is, the more likely I am to go see it.

22. Me too...and maybe go see it twice.
If there is one thing I can't stand, it's people who memorize cliches and repeat them mindlessly.
Someone ask Justin and Stevie why they aren't joining the service to defend freedom instead of desperately trying to find ways to limit it for others.

If they don't want to go to the movie, they don't have to. That's their right and who the hell cares anyway? I'm sure the people who made it weren't depending on the fundies as part of their target audience.

are going to do a DU fieldtrip to "Brokeback Mountain". If we're lucky Phred Phelps and crew will be there. So, if you're in the area, we'd love for you to join us. Bookmark this thread DU Field trip or ComerPerro's original thread at Topeka Field Trip to keep up with when it will happen.

27. Just who is standing with a loaded gun to their heads
forcing them to attend 'Brokeback Mountain'? Did Congress pass a Constitutional amendment making attendance at this movie mandatory? Here's a novel concept: if you don't like it --- DON'T GO --- but shut the fuck up with your smug, arrogant, holier-than-thou moralizing and leave the rest of us alone. And if 'Brokeback Mountain' and Hollywood is SO evil, why hasn't Jesus come down in cosmic clouds of fire and brimstone to smite every movie theatre its playing in? THESE are the people who want to legislate THEIR morality and beliefs into the law-of-the-land for ALL of us.

You know. The kind you have to drive downtown on one way streets, pay an extra $5 to park, and sit in 50 year old chairs to see? You know. The kind of theaters that these self delusional suburban cretins never heard of?
