1. I believe that it did.
Somebody has learned how to time these things for OUR side, finally.

3. Maybe the NYT "holding" the story back was a good thing...
.. kinda like holding your ammo for the best shot.

2. Had a lot to do with it...
And not just from coincidence or "auspicious timing" (as you so eloquently put it :toast: )
More than a few speeches on the Senate floor mentioned this story. Feingold even said something along the lines of "Given this, I don't want to hear anything about how we can trust this administration to protect civil liberties." (not a direct quote, I'm paraphrasing).

So, I think this story directly affected the vote, not simply in its timing, but also in its usage on the Senate floor.

4. It helped a lot
but Feingold seemed to have a pretty decent sized opposition against it before the story broke too. I think Bush overestimated how much his Republican allies really loved The Patriot Act. I think this also kills dead that ridiculous Patriot Act II idea.

5. unfortunately it is still alive but hopefully it will get far more
scrutiny by a much wider audience that it richly deserves.

the best we can hope for is an expiration of certain provisions but in the neoCON world apparently they don't need to follow any provisions or laws they just torture who they want when they want whatever they want.

peace

7. Dumb question:
I've got C-SPAN 2 on still from the debate over cloture this morning. Is what I'm listening to the fillibuster? Or are they just rambling on about nothing much for no particular reason?

It hasn't been clear all day. I had to leave for a while, after the cloture vote went down, and when I got back they were making speeches about Corzine; now its all kind of different things. I missed the segeway, apparently.

8. Apparently they don't need a "patriot act" to suspend our civil rights
they simply do whatever the hell they want, whenever they want, and it's okay with the "majority". Whatever it takes to keep us "safer", right?

15. Yep, beware the Executive Order, signed in secret and never mentioned
Much as I would like to celebrate, this is not over. Cheney and others will go down if they are removed from power. They do not seem the sorts to let that happen.

Did anyone else hear this newest Osama scare this morning?

12. It SHOULD be breaking the President's butt. . .
There are more than enough grounds for impeachment. His first and primary job is to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Period.
