Breast-feeding while drunk

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- A 27-year-old woman accused of suffocating her 4-month old infant after she drunkenly fell asleep on top of her while breast-feeding will stand trial.

Lorinda Hawkins, of Appleton, is charged with one count of child neglect causing a death. She waived her preliminary hearing Friday in Winnebago County Circuit Court and was scheduled to enter a plea Jan. 5.

District Attorney William Lennon has said Hawkins already was on probation for neglect of the same child at the time of the baby's death Feb. 23. Court documents show at the time, she was prohibited from drinking alcohol and from having unsupervised contact with all four of her children at once.

She was drunk and they were both sleeping on the sofa. The mother rolled over and trapped the baby against the back of the sofa and she smothered. No charges were ever filed. I guess by the time she called 911 it was too late for any kind of accurate blood alcohol test.

I never understood how people could think to get drunk and take care of babies. It just doesn't work.
