Is America ready to elect a Mormon as its President?

By Tim Reid

Saviour of the Salt Lake City Olympics has greater ambitions

HE MADE millions as a businessman, saved the scandal-plagued 2002 Winter Olympics, appeals to social conservatives, is liked by moderates, boasts chiselled good looks and has been a successful Republican governor in one of America’s most liberal states.

In Mitt Romney, the Massachusetts Governor who all but threw his hat into the 2008 presidential race yesterday, Republicans have the almost perfect candidate. Except for one potential problem: Mr Romney is a Mormon.

After announcing that he would not be seeking a second term as Massachusetts governor, a widely anticipated move that clears the way for a 2008 White House bid, Mr Romney implicitly posed a fascinating political question: can a Mormon win enough votes to become President of the United States?

Mr Romney, whom analysts on both sides of the political divide say will be a serious contender in 2008, was elected governor of Massachusetts — one of the bluest of Democrat blue states — as a social moderate. In the past year, however, he has changed his stance on social issues important to religious conservatives, the base of the Republican Party that wields enormous influence in the Republican primary race. Mr Romney once said that abortion should be “safe and legal”, but now opposes it. He denounced the decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Court to legalise gay marriage. Calling himself a “red speck in a blue state”, he has emphasised socially conservative positions on the death penalty, stem-cell research and birth control.

11. There is a world of difference between
Quakers and Mormons. That being said...I think Nixon was a piss poor example of Quaker. And I won't blame the Quakers for him and his dreams of Monarcy. And by that same token, I won't blame the Mormons for Mit...he's a republican businessman through and through...so I don't expect he'd be guided by any actual moral principles beyond those he needs to parrot to keep his RW voters.

2. it's not just that he's Mormon
He's an ass. I live in MA, and some of the things that come flying out of his pie hole are not just idiotic-- but flat out laughable.

He also isn't a moderate. He's a hard core conservative who has FUCKED UP MA's education system.

He reminds me of W x(

16. I saw a few minutes
of him on "Road to the White House" last Sunday before Mark Warner and his public speaking reminds me of how Bush used to be in his old days. At least he doesn't pretend to be a southern cowboy. I give him that much. He can be an ass on his own. Heh. I wonder how the fundies would like a Mormon...They don't consider them to be Christian either since they don't follow the main beliefs I don't think. Than again I don't know much about Morminsim.

10. All I can say is, the person holding that sign
must live a creepily boring life. That sign makes me want to spy on him and see what he's really like or into, because I have yet to meet a "perfect" person.

The mormon influence on Romney is probably overblown.

on edit:

It's funny how conservatives seem to forget that Mormons are the biggest Republican voting block out there...why are they lumped with liberals?

15. Mitt got elected in Mass. by pretending to be a moderate.
Conservatives should ask themselves if he is an opportunist
pretending to be a conservative. His flip-flop on EC and
abortion should give him much to explain.

19. "boasts chiselled good looks"
A candidate's religion has nothing to do with the candidate's important attitudes or thought processes. A candidate's religion is just a superficial characteristic of the candidate. Surely the voters should ignore that and focus on what matters: "chiselled good looks."

(Yes, that's sarcasm.)

21. Up here in New Hampshire we refer to him as....
...a MASShole-a rich clown from out of state who summers at an exclusive waterfront home (in his case $5 million deal in Wolfeboro on Lake Winnepasaukee) who thinks he owns this state too....Made the papers here 2 years back for illegally blocking off access to the lake in front of his summer place and using Mass State security personnel to enforce it....Religion is the least of this clowns problems...

25. New motto : "Gott Mit(t) Uns"
Gott Mit Uns (meaning God With Us) was a motto of the Prussian emperor; it was later used by German armies in both World Wars I and II (during the latter because of Hitler's desire not to alienate German Christians).
