US House votes to wall up Mexico border
US House votes to wall up Mexico border

Fri Dec 16, 2:43 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The House of Representatives voted to build a wall along the US border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration.

The 260-159 voice vote on an amendment to a bill on illegal immigration "mandates the construction of specific security fencing, including lights and cameras, along the Southwest border for the purposes of gaining operational control of the border.

"Fencing has been designated in sectors that have the highest number of immigrant deaths, instances of drug smuggling and illegal border crossings," because of the large number of would-be immigrants who die in the desert attempting to cross the US border.

The US border with Canada was not forgotten. The bill "includes a requirement for the Secretary of
Homeland Security to conduct a study on the use of physical barriers along the Northern border."

The US-Mexico border is 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) long.

2. This will become our Hadrian's Wall
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:03 PM by Selatius
In the end, it won't stop anything from crossing over into the US because nobody will no longer want to cross over. Why?

Because the US will be ruined and left in ashes because of the corruption and greed of those who hunger for more power and control at the expense of everything else. If they had their way, there will be nothing left but darkness and feudalism where they are the feudal lords, just the way they liked it 1500 years ago.

11. I think both. That's what walls are meant to do, but they
don't work. Read your history from the legend of Troy to the Great Wall of China and every medieval walled city in Europe since then. They will fall, no matter what. More waste of taxpayer's money.

Let the freepers pay for it if that's what they want. We should protest this use of our money.

39. You wouldn't, but one of these days as this nonsense
continues, it's bound to create bad diplomacy between the two countries, then the facists will prohibit you traveling there. This is where the wall is useful to them. It's the same as the iron curtain. They won't want you going there for cheaper drugs and dentistry. And, if abortion becomes illegal then they definitely don't want you going to Mexico for one.

26. Contracts to build going to private corporations, I presume?
Same corporations who subcontract for labor and end up with undocumented workers getting shafted like on the Navy Bases in LA where Halliburton is fixing things?

Guess they can't steal as much money if they just through employers of illegal workers in the slammer?

And, yes, secure the ports if you are really interested in protecting America! Whole armies and their equipment could be coming in those unchecked cargo containers that get lifted off ships and set onto a semi heading out to who knows where! Pretty damned easy to get in some materials for dirty bombs, especially after Cheney made sure the CIA's covert weapons proliferating monitor network is shattered.

38. Something there is that doesn't love a wall
MENDING WALL
Robert Frost

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."

END
