1. I think Danny Goldberg (Air America's CEO) didn't like Marc's humor.
And welcome to DU! :hi:

3. I Know if Marc got good enough ratings, Danny Goldberg couldn't care less
about his type of humor.

And I LOVED Morning Sedition.

4. Marc's humor is the best
The rest might at times be humorous but they're not uproariously funny like Marc. He was a fresh drink of water compared with a couple of the others (I won't name which), which are unbelievably dumb and silly in a really slapsticky way.

10. Exactly.
He was cerebrally funny, which is very hard to do.

19. Exactly. If I want silly humor, I can watch preschooler cartoons
I like a sarcastic wit with no holds barred.

I do think, tho, that the show isn't continuing because Marc's asking salary might have been rather hefty.

I'm going to miss his stand-up comic friends' characters, particularly that Planet Bush Bureau Chief, Lawton Smalls. My favorite! And that brawling Irish guy. What was his name?

2. He was on Majority Report last night and said his contract was up for
renewal and they didn't want to keep him because of lack of funds. He will be in LA doing his own show for AAR though.

5. How were the ratings? How did Mark and Marc get along?
Marc seems like a genuinely nice guy, but a bit frantic and silly for me. I won't miss the Mort Mortenson or the YFI2000 or the Streisand compound silliness. I did like the Republican "deal with it, god loves you" character. It seems like a temporary fix to have Mark and Rachel. I hope the plan is to put Randi on in the morning eventually.

7. Yuck.
I couldn't handle Randy first thing in the morning. Too intense. I'd need WAY more coffee first.

I like her, but I just couldn't handle her that early.

15. Word has it that Marc and Mark became a team quickly.
If you listened to today's show you could really tell the affection they had for each other. Having listened to MS daily for nearly the entire time it was on the air, you can tell that Riley and Maron were a good team.

In spite of the fact that Maron was the head cheese on the program, their serious dialogs were some of the tightest and best discussions on talk radio. They were so tight it sounded scripted, but you knew it wasn't. They just had the incredible rapport with one another. Riley balanced Maron perfectly.

Also, listen to their interviews. Maron and Riley trade off seamlessly with each other and with the interviewee. This kind of stuff doesn't happen without a kind of respect for one another.

I am very sad that MS is gone. Danny Goldberg should be thrashed for doing this. It's inexcusable.

People need to download the 9 Sept 2005 program which was broadcast live from The New School with special guest former Senator Bob Kerry (currently New School President). Live radio rarely gets better than that.

On stage, left to right: Mark Riley, Sen Bob Kerry, Marc Maron, New School students.

8. pending election ... right time for a change
While Air America was making ratings progress in other dayparts with personalities such as Al Franken and Randi Rhodes, mornings were a different story. "Historically, AAR hasn't done as well in mornings as other dayparts," said Danny Goldberg, CEO for AAR. "Drive-time morning is such an important time, and with the pending election, we felt this was the right time for a change."

9. his contract is up. the decision needed to be made to renew or not.
they decided to make changes.

not at all unusual.

im sure it has to do with ratings and/or managements vision of where to go with the programming.

20. Al Franken? God bless him, but...
He tries to be funny.. and isn't. I know somebody will go after me for this.

And don't get me wrong, I'm 100% with him politically. The man's brave, tough, persistent, has a big heart, is a go-getter, brilliant, correct in the things he says, and takes no shit from anybody. Love him, but his humor is as silly as a goose in a clown outfit, and he's always trying to be funny.
