1. I had no problem with Google.
Maybe there's a server problem in your area?

Counterspy ... can get it at download.com - if there is anything on your computer Counterspy will find it. Be sure to delete before the 2 week trial is up if you decide you don't want to keep it.

4. If you use the Google tool bar (and even if not), it may be spyware
I'd run an adware scan. You can download them free off the web.

5. Is it the DNS only?

Not being able to resolve the DNS is usually a problem with your ISP.

If it's resolving but not connecting, it's a problem somewhere in the route between you and the remote server, and you could figure out where the problem is with a traceroute. Not that you could do anything about it, but it might give you peace of mind to know there is a problem somewhere out there.

If it's the DNS that's the main problem, you could alleviate some of it by using a local HOSTS file for sites you visit frequently. This is a plain text file formatted and placed in a specific directory that you put in the URL names and their associated IP addresses. Your browser will check your HOSTS file first before it contacts the DNS server. I had a rather long one I used when I ran Windoze, and I've carried most of it over to my Linux installation.

You can also use HOSTS to block certain sites by having the name resolve to 127.0.0.1.
