Statement on Recommendation of Robert Lenhard for FEC Post
Washington, DC - Meredith McGehee, President and Executive Director of the Alliance for Better Campaigns released this statement following an attempt by Congressional Democrats to replace Scott Thomas with Robert Lenhard on the Federal Election Commission:

“The selection of Robert Lenhard by Congressional Democratic leaders Tom Daschle {D-S.D.} and Nancy Pelosi {D-Calif.} to replace Scott Thomas on the Federal Election Commission is beyond disappointing. It is symptomatic of why the Congressional Democrats remain in the minority. This selection of an avowed opponent of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA) is a transparent and hypocritical attempt to have it both ways: to claim support for campaign finance reform while working behind the scenes to chip away at the recently enacted law. Even the best laws can be easily undermined by inadequate enforcement. Lenhard’s credentials for the job of enforcement of campaign finance law are suspect and reveal that Washington politicians’ addiction to the money machine remains hard to break.”
