The single best reason I can give for support of the DP for some crimes
If found guilty in a court of law for the mass murders I believe he is guilty of, I MUST support the harshest of penalties for this criminal:

That's a slippery slope

Because what you're advocating is, essentially- drawing & quartering.

Again- you're feeling and acting viscerally- not using reason.

There is only ONE rational argument of the death penalty- and only one.

Specific deterrance, namely that this particular person will never kill again. And even that one can and should be weighed against itself and against other rational arguments.

There is no general deterrance assicated with capital punishment- and every other argument likewise fails.

Every single one- which is why so few countries use the death penalty.

2. You're cheating, Walt...
...and you're arguing that the DP should hinge on personal animosity ;-)

As I said in another DP thread:

You execute to save yourselves the money and bother of keeping 'mad dogs'.

Execution serves no other purpose than to empty a room for another.

Nations that value the lives of -all- their citizens have lower crime rates. Nations that don't have high crime rates.

Isn't that obvious?

5. Monkey see, monkey do....
Manipulating people's fears and stoking hatred are tactics of the RW, it's not incredibly enlightened to think this sort of thing would appeal to anyone progressive or dare i admit it, liberal.
It's just more caveman style grunting to me.

3. How about treason under UCMJ? Now that is a different ballgame
played under different rules.

6. Do you want to explain how you motivate troops...
...by shooting them yourself?

Mutinous troops are more likely to shoot their commanders. An actual "spy" is unable to do any harm while incarcerated.

How do you think you'll apply the DP in a manner that gets desirable results not available through incarceration?

4. Nah I oppose the death penalty
even for this evil man.

Besides, the thought of him behind bars for a long time is just too sweet.

7. The problem with recognizing that the Death Penalty
has been applied to people who did nothing wrong, however - is the realization that they could do it to you - even if you didn't kill anyone - (or had anyone killed).

Plus there is the problem where you and I would be more likely to get the death penalty for nothing than Bush* would for killing a million people (or having them killed).
