Lover gives stranger $15,000 ring
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4534052.stm

A disappointed lover in the US has left a $15,000 (£8,500) diamond engagement ring in a stranger's unlocked car, accompanied by a heartfelt message.
"Hopefully this will land in the hands of someone you love, for my love is gone now," read the note.

The car's owner, from Westborough, 48km (30 miles) west of Boston, told police about his find after having it valued.

"This appears to be random, but we don't really know," police Lt Paul Donnelly told local media.

...

The anonymous message read: "Merry Christmas. Thank you for leaving your car door unlocked. Instead of stealing your car I gave you a present.

1. "Stranger" should have kept his big trap SHUT..
now he owes the IRS taxes . He should have just given it to his wife/girlfriend or had the stones re-set into three very nice neclaces that he could have sold on ebay:)

6. Gifts usually are not taxable to recipient, the
recipient (donee) is taxed only if giver (donor) doesn't pay the gift tax. Donor can give up to $11,000 (this year) to any one individual without having to report the gift. Since the donee doesn't know whether the donor is reporting the gift (donor hasn't told donee that he wants donee to report), he should should assume the donor is reporting since it is primarily the donor's responsibility. Besides that, the lifetime exemption amount would wipe out the tax on the $4K.

Just in case you care to know. :hi:
