Bush defends spying in U.S.
SAYING EAVESDROPPING IS LEGAL AND EFFECTIVE, PRESIDENT VOWS MORE
By James Kuhnhenn
Knight Ridder

WASHINGTON - President Bush acknowledged Saturday that he ordered the National Security Agency to spy on Americans and he defiantly vowed to continue such domestic electronic eavesdropping ``for as long as our nation faces a continuing threat from Al-Qaida and related groups.''

In an unusual step, Bush delivered a live weekly radio address from the White House in which he defended his action as ``fully consistent with my constitutional responsibilities and authorities.''

Bush's statement came a day before he was scheduled to make a rare Oval Office address to the nation, at 6 p.m. PST today, celebrating the Iraqi elections and describing what his press secretary Saturday called the ``path forward.''

White House aides said Bush appears ready to at least hint at reductions in U.S. troop levels in Iraq.

(article has more)

Let him spy all he wants. Worst case scenario, I'll have to wear underwear when going to bed for now on. None of us has done anything wrong except exercise our Constitutional right to criticize what he is doing.

Edited: Grammar and wondering how Iraq has anything to do with Bush spying on US citizens... there are more Iraqi worth spying on as we've made an infinitely bigger enemy out of them than they were originally...

2. I'm waiting to hear the constitutional attorney weigh in on this
I sure have always assumed that was illegal.

3. What if he decides that wearing underwear to
bed is unpatriotic, unamerican and illegal? If he can decide that spying like he's doing is legal even tho it's prohibited in the constitution, he can decide what is illegal. Off to the cc's with ya.

4. Why don't the Redumblicants just remove the parts of the
Constitution they deem unnecessary? like this bothersome right.

Amendment IV - Search and seizure. Ratified 12/15/1791.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

7. Exactly... and there's no exception that says "unless a President feels
like it." He once again has broken the LAW. He has once again gone against the Constitution.

Even though I have done nothing wrong except exercise my Constitutionally protected RIGHTS I would never say "let him spy on me" because it's WRONG... it's illegal and it's unconstitutional. At some point we must say enough is enough. This is so very reminiscent of the bad ole days of Hoover, McCarty and Nixon. It was wrong then and it's wrong now. This sets a dangerous precedent if it's allowed to continue.

I think the neo-Cons who are defending this should ask themselves would it be acceptable for a future Democratic president (oh say.. umm... Hillary Clinton :-D ) to spy on whomever they felt like... whom ever they thought *might* be a threat? What if THEY were seen as a threat because they were members of the wrong bowling league or church? What if the government monitored EVERY thing they did... EVERY conversation they had... EVERY conversation their child had and could take it as a "threat" if their paranoia felt like it?

It's by the grace of the CONSTITUTION that ALL of our rights are protected... defending our Bill of Rights and Constitution is not just something for some select Americans... it's for ALL.

5. That's kind of a lackadaisical response
What Bush did was illegal, he's not above the law. It's impeachable. Not to be taken lightly.

6. Like Bush would know.....
whether it's legal or not.

Earth to Bush: as Condi said about herself today, you are not a lawyer. Or a Constitutional scholar.

...Constitutional Trial Balloons #2...#3...#4...(and so on) are anybody's guess.

How about that two-term max "situation?"

10. I'm not that worried
As I am not doing anything wrong. As long as that's the case I don't care. I could understand if someone was planning on bombing a building or dealing coke being worried. But other than that I just don't give a shit. Just my humble opinion.
