The fish rots from the head down (Culture of Corruption)
Like father, like son; the current levels of hubris, deceit, cronyism, and corruption, in this republican congress, are a mirror image of the Bush administration ethics. If the metaphorical head of the household is totally lacking in character, then the kids will be too. The republicans have consciously, or subliminally, gotten the message that If the highest office in the land can get around the law, they can too. I honestly believe if we had a president with the slightest shred of integrity, these guys on the hill wouldn't be in the trouble they're in today.

1. An interesting thought
I believe that we had a President with integrity in the WH, these corrupt people wouldn't be tolerated, especially with 2006 elections looming. But I think the repukes cater only to those who are as corrupt as they are, thinking that they will be able to continue to steal elections.

btw, welcome to DU! :hi:

3. Thanks!
Personally, I assume anybody who's a republican has a mental defect. This administration's example has been liberating for the republican 'defect'.

2. we have to address, as rational human beings
the fact that our system IS AN EFFECTIVE PLUTOCRACY, and it is working fine, if that i what you want.
If you want a democracy, the US was never designed for that, rather to preserve the voice of the
white masters and the property owners amongst the din of the darker skins of democracy.

This i think gives a healthy insight in to the greater conundrum you raise:

4. I think it rotted from both ends toward the middle
I've had some involvement in local politics on behalf of my community college instructors' union and was sickened by how much business interests bribe and corrupt the process, to the point that building contracts take precedent over faculty having health insurance, or even how many days of instruction we offer.

5. yep
that's kind of how I see it too. All you have to do is graze the surface of local politics to be astounded how much this kind of corruption pervades our entire culture. Microcosm = macrocosm. The most greedy elements of our society are hell bent to control everything and their dominance has a profound effect on the rest of us.

6. the difficulty is money makes people pay attention longer than public good
Business interests are single-minded like the terminator. The rest of us pay attention to varying degrees when business interests push us out of our comfort zone, when they over-reach. When they just reach, we fall back to sleep and they can largely do what they want.
