Kansan’s far-flung campaign trail is paved with compassion

TCHE, Congo –– The road to the White House typically leads through Iowa and New Hampshire. For Sam Brownback, it has led to this desolate refugee camp in the hills of eastern Congo.

The Republican senator from Kansas moved among women in colorful dresses and children in ripped T-shirts, occasionally dropping to his knees to listen more closely to tales of human degradation.

A glassy-eyed farmer described an ethnic militia attacking his village, slaughtering his children and dozens of neighbors with machetes. Old women and young girls spoke of multiple rapes.

“You just can’t imagine a thing like that,” Brownback said softly.

1. And this one thing I truly respect about Sen. Brownback. Other than
this one thing, I can only think of all the reasons why I don't respect him.

At least he is showing compassion and trying to get awareness of the situation.
