"A can't-pass measure added to a must-pass measure" & WE LOSE ANWAR!
House Narrowly Approves $40 Billion Budget-Cutting Plan

By CARL HULSE
Published: December 19, 2005
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 - Working through the night, the House early today voted to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling as part of a military measure and narrowly approved a $40 billion budget-cutting plan as bleary-eyed lawmakers concluded a marathon weekend session.

The Pentagon spending bill, adopted on a 308-106 vote shortly after 5 a.m., also included a $29 billion hurricane recovery package for the Gulf Coast, a $3.8 billion proposal to prepare for a potential flu pandemic and a 1 percent across-the-board cut that shaved a total of about $8 billion from current federal spending.

Democrats assailed majority Republicans for using the Pentagon bill to win approval of the drilling plan after objections by moderate Republicans led to it being eliminated from the budget measure.

"A can't-pass measure has been added to a must-pass measure in order for the Republicans to give an early huge Christmas gift to the oil companies of the United States," said Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts.

2. Imagine.
If the past 20 years of financial support we keep giving these highly profitable oil companies were put in to alternative energy research anmd development.

I doubt that it would harm the economy.

3. A real f*cking shame. They resort to this to get bad bills passed.

maybe they think no one is paying attention and it will all be forgotten in 2006. We have got to work hard to gain back majorities in 2006 or these unfair, underhanded maneuvers will just continue. ANWAR- another possible victim of the Bush Presidency.

5. There's one thing about their tactics I don 't understand....
Why do they set precedents that only benefit them now, but could work against them in the future? When the Dems retake the House and Senate, what's to stop them from simply following the precedent the Republicans set? This applies to so much of their strategy; if Bush can declare a unilateral, unprovoked war, why not a Dem? If Bush can wiretap Americans without authorization, why not a Dem? If Cheney can hold secret energy meetings and withold any information about them, why not a Dem? The list goes on and on, but I don't know how they're going to react to Democrats with power doing this to them.
