Not sure about the rest of you - but I can no longer even listen to his voice over the radio. We were driving home the other night, and a snip on his speech was played on the news up here.
For the first time - I could not even stomach his voice. And, for a political junkie as I am - this is unprecedented.
So, I read his speech this morning. And I guess I am glad to have tuned him out because his speech was not surprizing or filled with candor as the newsies said it was.
He authorized going to war against a nation that posed little threat to America and his justification was bogus. Or.....the threat he talks about is not the real threat that Iraq posed to America. and that threat he will not discuss publically. That threat of economic security when Iraq switched trading oil into Euro's instead of US greenbacks. (so goes some tinfoil hat theories anyways)
Bush lied in his speech. No surprize there either. Saddam Hussein wasn't the one who chose war......Bush was the one. He chose it. He used bogus information to sell it to the people. And it enrages me that Bush so candidly slides the burden of over 100 000 deaths onto Hussein's shoulders saying it was Hussein that chose war when he did not disarm. HE CANNOT DISARM WHAT HE DOES NOT HAVE.
I am not suggesting that Hussein was a good leader - because he was not. He was awful. But I have an incredibly hard time using regime change without justifiable legitimate internationally sanctioned causes. Bush lied to the UN and to America when he stated that he would absolutely go back to the UN seeking a second resolution authorizing use of force. He did not. He said he would go back regardless of the whip count. He did not.
And so - Bush credibility is in tatters because of Bush's decisions and policies. His "candor" is false. He still blames others.
And I weep with all the talk of winning.....like it is a football game or something. "Winning" isn't a noble cause when it comes to war. STOPPING THE WAR AND SEEKING PEACE SHOULD BE THE ONLY OPTIONS CONSIDERED.
Nobody talks about the famous Bremer edicts. There are many - and when you read them and fully understand what they entail....well, I am sorry America.....but you have no right to "win." It breaks my heart to say that. I weep for the families of soldiers lost. I weep for the families of Iraqi's who have suffered unbelievable hardship and loss. I am terribly sorry. Sorry because America has long been considered a free, just, lawful nation that everyone should pursue living like them. Sorry because America has abandoned its principles and installed instead repressive policies of spying and torture. Sorry because America has secret prisons abroad outside the boundaries of justice, truth and law.
It comes down to this. Do you abandon your principles to "win"? And curse those who put you in such a horrible situation of having to choose....choose between justice and the law.....or winning at any cost. To have to choose knowing instinctively that torture and perpetual detainment without just cause....and condoning those actions for fear you just might "lose" is abhorrent, immoral and unamerican.
Where have all the white knights gone?
