14. Hey, don't worry, They might have another award, but instead
of Person of the Year, it will refer to a specific part of the human anatomy. Boy, I really hope so.:sarcasm:

6. well what else is he supposed to do to get the US to do something
We are "supposedly" the richest country in the world. If you are acting on behalf of the poor in Africa, what would you do??

15. Wow.
I'm a huge fan of U2. They've been my heroes since the early 1980s.

Bono is a humanitarian, and he deserved the honor Time Magazine bestowed upon him. It's a real shame that the liberals and progressives here at DU are ignorant to Bono's achievements, and passion for obliterating poverty.

I'm saddened by this thread.

16. I have no problems with Bono
I just don't think he was the most noteworthy person of 2005.

17. There are plenty of U2 haters
here. I really don't understand it. Bono especially seems to rile up most because he is not afraid to be seen with some rather shady characters, i.e. rethug wingnuts, asking for help. Personally I'd rather see more Ted Nugent or Sammy Hagar hating threads. Now there are two wingnut "artists" that deserve a smackdown.

19. Totally

Bono has explained why he hangs with the Blairs and Bushes of the world. He says that if you want change, you'd be a fool to think you can do it without the United States. And Britain. And that's just a start.

Bono has explained, most recently to Jann Wenner, that you have to pay to play. And that his desire is simple: that no children die from mosquito bites. Starting now. Everywhere. A worldwide standard, a declaration of human rights. And you don't get the people to understand that, without talking to the most powerful, and likely unsympathetic, world players.

He got what he wanted. Didn't he get what all of us wanted? Why aren't we celebrating that? And he's not done, and he showed us all how to do it, and we should actually be looking to the examples being set by humanitarians rather than criticizing them.

In a time of pessimism and despair and fear, Bono and the Gates were an inspiration. I feel they are, in my opinion, the most notable and worthy people of this difficult year, 2005.

18. I don't get this thread.
Are people upset because they wanted someone else, or ....I don't know what else. The Gates exemplify progressive mindsets, as they use their cast fortune to bring need and change instantly to afflcited areas, and at the same time, provide scholarships and technology to less fortunate communities at home. Bono...Maybe I'm getting older, but shit, who doesn't like Bono? Fighting for the third world? What's wrong with that?

5. As long as we're talking about it, I'm sure that's all they care about.
It may have been different at one time, but I don't think there's any significant inherent difference between Time's Person of the Year and People's Sexiest Man Alive.

They're house brands, and each is a commercial for itself.

8. Person of the year should be Cindy Sheehan
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 02:18 PM by chrisau214
But it's not like being Time's Person of the Year actually means anything, and it isn't intended to represent the 'best' person of the year.

Since when is Bono a Bush ass kisser?

10. No, not the "best" person of the year...
that's not the criteria at all... it is the most "notable" person, the one who has had the largest impact on history and/or the news in the past year. You sure don't have to be "good" to win this brass ring, just either notable (or notorious).

Nevertheless, Cindy should have gotten it... with that I agree!

9. Yes, indeed
Very safe boring choices that are not very particular to 2005.

Cleary Cindy Sheehan should be person of the year.

11. Yes I think your right about
Cindy Sheehan being Person of the Year, but I think the cover should have been shared with the Iraq people who have had to take a beating from the American Government.

12. Bill Gates donates 39 billion dollars a year to charities all over
the world. He also visits the countries he donates to and actively participates in the charities. I think he deserves to win.

they gave their endowment $39bil.

It's not just Bill, Melinda is an equal partner in the venture.

22. if you read the article, it is QUITE convincing.
The numbers are friggin' incredible.

Don't judge by the faces on the cover. The content is the evidence in favor of TIME's choice.

I would have chosen Hurrican Katrina as the Thing of the Year...

23. follow-up to myself,
it's about the need for philantropy. In Bill Gates's case, he used to give next to nothing, now it's his primary job. It really is an incredible turnaround.

You gotta see the numbers of people the three of them are helping, and how they're doing it.

25. Gates, yes... Bono, no.
As much as I dislike Gates for his business practices, he is truly moving mountains when it comes to his charity work. He deserves recognition for that.

Bono is an opportunist and a tool.

the time magazine "person" of the year was supposed to be about what the biggest newsmaker was not about giving honours. this year i would say mother nature.

but seems time wants to be unpredictable while safe and that's why they go with whoever they go with.
