Cheney's Quote - is this foreshadowing!?

Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 02:33 PM by Lyle I just saw this quote from from Cheney on Reuters regarding the protesting against the use of spying: "So there's a backlash pending, I think the backlash is going to be against those who are suggesting somehow we shouldn't take these steps in order to defend the country," Perhaps he will order another major terrorist attack to justify his position? Is he setting the Dems up? Here it comes...

We know we will be "New Orleans'd" when the Big Earthquake hits California - no FEMA - our National Guard will be called up en masse and shipped off to Iraq or Iran or Korea or wherever. We know that our NY and NV and CA universities won't see research grants, and our government contractors won't see contracts. Heck - *Co has already cut out the money for extending rapid transit (BART) to Silicon Valley.

3. Cheney is a creature of the government.

He's been in "public service" for a long time. He knows how it works. He believes he knows how people work, too. Take his quote, for instance. "The backlash is going to be against those who want to defend this country". See how he does that? Presto, anyone who protests against this, is in fact a traitor. Too bad Dick has been in government such a long time. He doesn't realize that the rest of us can actually think. We see through his transparent labeling and manipulation.

I know you were paraphrasing, but I disagree with what you say he meant. I read his statement to mean (my paraphrase), "The backlash is going to be against those who disagree with how we are defending the country." It sounded like a threat to me, but a nonsensical one.

15. Yes, you could be right.

I went back and checked Cheney's original quote. It could be 1 of 2 things: a) a way to label anyone who would go against spying. They've done this countless time: if you disagree, you're a traitor. "You're either with us or against us". It's a form of manipulation. b) It could very well be a veiled threat. He's getting the word out there that anyone who disagrees will be dealt with. But with Cheney, it could be both!

14. The spying already went well beyond terrorist suspects.

They can't use the "protecting against terrorism" meme because the spying included stuff well outside anything related to terrorism.
